There's lots of reasons to make fun of the Smart Car but a lot of engineering went into making its crash cage. If you look at the aftermath the vehicle is still in one piece without too much crumpling. Damage doesn't seem to have entered the drivers compartment.

Had this guy been wearing a seatbelt he would have survived with some pretty nasty whiplash from all that spinning but otherwise would have been fine.
