What were things like in pre-Nazi Germany? Were there large groups of people starting to share nationalist sentiments like we have in 2017?

post WW1 germany is one of THE most interesting historical periods in recent history. seriously anon do some reading, the parallels to modern society are absolutely astonishing.

putsch attempts from both the right and left swarmed the government to do away with the corrupt, crumbling democracy. Riots in the streets, 300 or so political assassinations led by nationalists and communists. the economy tanked and the german dollar became worthless, trade isolationism practised by other countries made it hard for people to sell their goods.

eventually when gustav stresseman came into chancellory and then foreign minister, he changed the social and political life of germany greatly. many rural germans were disgusted at the liberal change that society underwent and when the great depression happened, it was evident that the economic progress that stresseman had introduced was only superficial as the majority of american loans went into 'city industry' and 'culture' rather than industrial or agricultural areas.

also, a SURPRISING amount of jews were communists back then. its not hard to understand the mindset of germans back in the day.

I would say that pre-WW1 Europe was actually even more interesting, from anarchist groups, groups of all ideological bents, secret societies, occultist societies, the formation of proper state secret services, etc. Everything you have right now, or everything you had between two world wars, you already had then, at least in proto-form.
