Have you ever been in the presence of someone so intelligent you felt like a complete retard in their presence a person so intelligent that the intellectual difference between you and him was equivalent to the intellectual difference between you and a Bernie supporter?

well, I met Joe Rogan yesterday.

at vegas. was playing poker fulltime for living and was in a 2 month trip. after wrapping up a day i liked to go to the imperial palace poker room for platters of subway cookies and baileys. they run a small 1/2 game and i enjoyed getting a nightcap and spazzing off like a retard for stress release.

there was this real loudmouth motherfucker there, he ended up stacking me.a bunch of times. no big deal but he was really getting under my skin with taunting people . he bragged about something and i took a dig at him like "oh and youre a big deal?" then he tells me about how he was the founder of ticketmaster. hiw he was worth billions and waiting for his private jet to get ready. then he starts hitting on every cocktail waitress in their native language, bulgarian, russiab, spanish, chinese and soon hes got women hanging all over him and hes stacked almost everyone on the table. These two bodyguards in suits eventually get him and.i see him get escorted to a limo out the front. fml must be nice.

I grew up around genuine geniuses (one is now a biology professor at Harvard, her initials were once OVA); they are nothing like the fake knowitall square-glasses sanctimonious full-of-themselves Rachel Maddow herd. If anything they are humble and genuinely nice and unpretentious. It's just that the conversations stumble because they keep encountering limits to what they can easily discuss, but they're not doing that on purpose. They are the last people in the world to talk like SJW empowerment-coder poseurs. They don't even think of themselves as maximally smart, they're too busy being fascinated by something they've been investigating.
>>
>>137013987

That's nice. Only 0.25% of the global population has an IQ at or higher than 145. That's one in 400 people. To feel like someone is just crazy smarter than me they'd need an IQ around 180, and that's about one in 30 million people.

That's why it's rare. Once you get into the tail end of the distribution, things get skewed.

NNT is frighteningly erudite but I don't get the impression his raw processing power is especially extraordinary. Even he'd admit he's no Mandelbrot. His gift is that he has a preternatural sense of the edges of what we can and cannot say is true about the world. It's like having perfect pitch for truth or, perhaps more accurately, how one should best arrive at the truth. It'd be terrifying to get into an argument with the guy but, at that score, you'd probably give him a run for his money on an IQ test. Yet you haven't really done anything have you? Only for yourself? I expected humanity thought more about us as a people, other than one individual. Which I'm not advocating socialism nor communism.

But if all you ever do is, me and what I do. Then humanity will never progress, you're what we call minimalists, and guess what the Baby Boomer was the same, why bother thinking about us as a collective whole? The future? What's that, I just need my immediate gains now.

You know what a government was meant to be right? It wasn't suppose to be the corrupt shit-hole it is now, it was a governing body, and initiative that we all may not have liked but needed and indirectly agreed on.

It was suppose to help run us efficiently and as one nation, one people. But you've all lost sight of that, nepotism is your goal and no one will care when you die. No one will sing praises, all you'll have is a crumbling tomb-stone with some nobodies name written on it.

Strive to do better, and pass that prosperity onto others. But do so responsibly, so they too may strive for new heights.

Hello, brother.

Agreed on almost all counts. It's almost fitting that only the slow, unfolding currents of time are broad enough to eventually bring the man the renown which is his due.

What strikes me about his insights, though, is how many times I find myself thinking, "Holy shit, he's right. And it was just sitting there, out in the open, waiting to be seen this whole time!"

It takes a particular type of keenness to see the truth hidden in plain sight. But I associate that more with a certain type of reflexive mental agility or compulsive concept manipulation-and-rotation. If present or internalised at a young age, it becomes much more about feeling your way to the answer than using the kind of serial logic wto associate with the kind of problem solving IQ generally tests for. Like Feynman and his gift for seeing through math competition questions to the hack that made the computational efforts of his potentially equally bright competitors redundant.

There has to be a reason that NNT is NNT while people equally or more bright than him have come nowherenear what he's done.

Child is unsure of what he wants in life, pursues education; develops an interest for health/social/medicine/drugs/biology/etc , determined to follow something along that path; ends up being a rich doctor, because it was the path of least resistance.

And by "least resistance", I don't mean "easy". Working a hard job isn't easy, but it's usually the only option for some people. If you've been set on the path of a doctor, it could take a lot of effort, but it's still the path of least resistance, because their pea brains already have the skillset and the necessary requirements; they've held that 4.0 GPA record, took more than 5 years of medical school; it's too late now, too late to become a garbage man.

Being gifted with a brilliant mind, yet choosing to abandon education, that was a path of "most resistance"... And yes, I'm superior to most people, because I chose the path of most resistance. I've fount meaning in life, a meaning that I'm satisfied with. And whose suicide statistic is higher? Mine, or a doctor's? Not mine.

See it's obvious once NN Taleb pointed it out, but the path he took to getting there was incredibly specific, unlikely, and definitely required an incredibly high IQ. He's almost certainly the smartest man in the world on the subject of randomness, and not many mathematicians of his caliber understand optionality like he does.

I don't think it was luck or mere cleverness that led him to figure it out. He clearly did his homework and thought things out, and then even beyond that he was able to articulate an entirely new concept and explain it so simply that even someone of average intelligence can understand "Please Mishandle".
>>
>>137024282
>Yes. And I'm pretty smart. IQ of 138. I've also met people so dumb it's made me lose bits of my hope for humanity
this. tfw everyone calls you "anti social" but you don't wanna be around them because they're fucking stupid
>>
Look guys I'm no genius, but I'm definitely able to aquire and learn toappmy knowledge in short periods of time.
My spatial IQ is 170
My verbal IQ is 140
But my logical reasoning IQ is over of 200 (206 average).
I've been running social beheavior experiments around this site and I found the most retarded shit right next to the most intelligent jokes I've ever read in my short life.
Sadly I only know this site from 3 years ago and I had to learn how the power of dumb people that's being influenciated by smart people works; the hard way.
Sincerely I've never met someone smart enough to make me feel retarded, but everytime I think about everything I do and what my human social brain makes me do is enough.

There's always a way in which I can comprehend how someone thinks and why they think like that if they are smarter, but I have never understood why dumb people are dumb, if they decide to be dumb and if there's a point where you're so inherent you can't avoid it.

I feel dumb whenever I am around dumb people because they pretty much have the same capabilities of a human but don't use them. And yet it is necessary for me to be in contact with them to do shit.

In other words, no matter how smart you are, without machines, you still depend on dumb people, and that makes me feel dumb, even tho there's way too much solutions for that problem
>>
>>137018322

Yes, IQ is the average of both numbers. There's also emotional iq, but I'd take that with a grain of salt.
>>
>>136998826
yes I'm pretty smart but just because average normie is faggot who can't even type properly when required, I met smarter people, but they're not usally much more smarter but much more driven
>>
>>137023390
Skipping the easy retorts, I used "erudite" because I can't think of anyone, except maybe Umberto Eco or Will Durant or Borges, who can match the man's grasp of history's great thinkers across so man you disciplines. And none of the above read as closely or synthesised so well or have found the gaps and flaws in that thinking as well as Taleb. His is a monstrous, rapacious, anastomatising intelligence.

There. A few more 5 dollar words for you.
>>
>>137018322
>>137025318

To add onto this, I learned that different parts of the brain are used for memorizing numbers compared to memorizing words. I can hear and repeat a series of digits without even trying, but repeating a sentence word-for-word is insanely difficult. It's probably opposite for the guy with poor spatial IQ.
>>
>>137025218
Your post amuses me because it's clear you've never been a manger or a team lead. Just wait until not only do you have to deal with a team of average IQ MAYBE 110, and make them work together to accomplish a goal. It'll blow your mind.

>>137025177
I know what you mean but I outgrew my misanthropy a while back. Now I actually like people but my god, I just can't interact with them on their level unless I'm blackout drunk and nearing incoherence. Most people tolerate me because I'm competent and friendly and extremely helpful, but there's this huge gap it's very difficult to deal with socially.

I met a bavarian guy online over a game of ArmA III, talked with him from evening till sunrise that day. Dude was literally a mercenary soldier for an american company, if I recall correctly. I could tell he wasn't bullshitting because my father is an army officer (so I already have inside knowledge on the subject).
Super articulate guy, interesting stories from Iraq, he was redpilled before I even knew it was a term (this is probably 4 years ago now).
His IQ probably wasn't genius level, but it must've been pretty high. What was more striking, though, was just that he seemed to know something about everything. These are the types of people where you just want to pick their brains.
He might've also been the only openly proud german I've encountered. Told me about how he had gotten all his grandpa's war medals from the war and how proud he was, even though it had been hidden away for a while because the family considered it shameful or something.
It really is rare to run into people who are truly based like this.

There's a big difference between being intelligent and being smart.

A borderline retard can be smarter than you in the sense that he knows more about a particular niche subject than you.

Intelligence is the difference between a monkey, you and then Joe Rogan, each gap representing an increase in intelligence.
>>
>>137025148
I think we're largely saying the same thing. Your point about his path being incredibly specific and not luck or cleverness-based is central to what I'm talking about. My sense is that his path started from its destination and worked backwards rather than some peripatetic journey through the classics to arrive, finally, at his conclusions. What I mean is that Taleb was almost certainly born with an exquisitely tuned intuitively sense about probability, risk and knowability which, honed on an early diet of the Classics, meant he was unable to digest the bullshit presented to him when he entered the professional sphere. So he returned to the great thinkers to see if they had any insight into the source of this internal disquiet. In much the same way that many of us have ended up on /pol having been viscerally repulsed by mainstream media reporting; at least, I know I was.

He even makes reference to the idea that a library is not for the books you've read but the books you may need to consult at some unknown point in the future. His conclusions were, in essence, only those ideas that survived the hostile environment of that inner sensitivity. Ergo, while his huge intelligence was highly important, that sensitivity would have been the critical factor. At least to my mind.

Good to see another fan here.
>>
>>137026603
Maybe North Hollywood is more a place in your mind than a place in Los Angeles. Maybe if you met Joe Rogan and told him your problems he would tell you "Just do what you think is right, believe it or not you know what you should be doing, it's just really hard, but you have to". Maybe then he would reach over with his strong arms and bring you closer to him. Maybe then he would turn you over. Maybe then he would tell you the secrets of the universe. Maybe then you would realize that Joe Rogan was inside you all along. Maybe then you would realize Joe Rogan is in all of us.

This, some posts, and analysis posted here and on other forums are from very intelligent people. It's as though they spent much more time studying and thinking about various issues in ways that I hadn't considered (and wouldn't have considered without reading their posts). I feel like a less intelligent person, but at the same time, I know that I can become like that if I dedicate myself to the development of my intellect and continue my readings. But instead I post here...
>>

So you're smarter than Rogain, so what, who isn't ?
>>
>>137028777
thanks you pedant fuck. do you really think i don't know what I'm saying? the main differentiation between intelligent people stems from emotional and social understanding. this is where the 'autist" jokes come from - people who seem to lack all ability to recognize what others are up to. any functioning intelligent person is immediately sizing up their audience and changing their language to reflect the listener. Effective communication is more important than trying to make yourself sound smart. Smart is applied intelligence and it's more valuable in life than raw computational ability or rote memorization skills in most cases. The people being described by OP and others typically have a balanced range of intelligence. I'd agree that Joe Rogan has a good emotional and social ability that enables him to effectively communicate. I'd also agree that he clearly is very intelligent intellectually because he lets it slip out on the regular. You can also catch him stopping himself and reverting back to character because he doesn't want to lose his audience. there are many ways to describe those with greater capacity than others and if you can't make shit out of yourself in this life you're probably lacking in some critical areas. as for /pol/ there are plenty of intelligent people here but there are also many, many dolts, the utterly average, and many people with a degree of some type of intelligence but who are entirely clueless when it comes to actually understanding and grasping the world around them including other people. for my purposes i recognize "width" in intelligence as a primary factor that sets people apart. the average person can only handle 2-3 ideas at one time. test this by trying to give someone instructions of some sort and watch as you lose them between steps 2 and 3. if you're someone who can easily process 8-10 ideas at a time and you have to deal with people with 1/3-1/4th your capacity, you'll fucking know it.
