Buying real estate, at least in the richer parts of Europe, is very much an investment. And historically buying houses outside the big cities has been a very bad investment with many people not bothering to maintain their houses, since it is practically worthless because nobody wants to live there.

I'm a home owner and don't necessarily enjoy paying a lot per sqm, but as long as I got what I need to function, it's just plain logic to put your money where they will give you most in return. And thats in or just outside the big cities.
