How should the proper borders for different countries be determined? Should they be based on ethnicity? If so, how is that to be defined, and what about ethnic minorities? Should they be based on language? What about changes in language over time? Should they be based on natural borders? There are few natural borders in the age of mass transportation.

Border referendums. That's the way the danish-german border was settled after WW1. Even though Britain proposed Denmark should get back all of slesvig-Holstein they decided it would be better to let the people that actually live there decide.
