As I understand it each state in the USA represents a set amount of votes.
And those votes only go to one candidate.

So, you vote as a state and not as an individual.

This is done because the United States of America is the UNITED STATES. Ultimately it's 50 different governments that all come together every so often to agree on a particular thing. Mix in the supreme court that gets chosen by the president of the United States (which gets chosen by the States) and you have yourself the government of the United States
