I just finished reading about the Second World War and I can most definitely relate. Think about it, 60 million people dead only for territorial borders to remain largely the same in Europe and collapse the once stable colonial establishment, killing European influence globally.

So many bright eyed young men, just trying to make the world a less shit place in their own way lying dead in a ditch or mangled beyond recognition, their last moments filled with fear. All because some stupid territorial disputes. Families with their fathers, brothers and sons taken from them forever, some of them being the last of their family line. Imagine what they could have been, the kids they could have raised- would Europe still be white? Possibly. Unfortunately we'll never know.

The gospel is an opiate for the soul, it only numbs the pain. The best way is through Buddhism and a healthy application of stoicism. They teach that we are all united in our suffering as it is a fundamental part of existence itself. That people lash out at one another because they are hurt and damaged in their own way, and so the most appropriate response is compassion to your fellow man. Christianity gets many of the morals right, however is steeped too much in dogma for most of us to apply the lessons in our everyday lives.

I hope we can recognise this important lesson as a species before it's all too late.
