The extremely sterile answer to this is that economic systems need information in order to be both effective and efficient at resource allocation.

In a free market system, it is (ironically) more of a collective effort, because everyone is participating in the market, selling and buying, thereby determining the prices of goods.

In a socialist system this advantage gets lost, because there is a small group of people that would need to be able to realistically gauge what the best allocation would be. Which of course they can't, because they lack all this information provided by individual economic activity. For instance, they have no clue about your favorite breakfast items. They might therefore allocate some dry oats to you instead of eggs and pork. This is hyperbole of course, but you can see this everywhere in the way governments are currently spending their money. Flashy postmodern art exhibitions very few people actually visit, social programs that benefit the extremely unproductive, free speech policing and so forth. None of this is actually affordable or beneficial enough to justify investing.

Then there is the motivation issue (why work if it doesn't belong to you?) as well as the moral hazard one: Why be careful with government funds, it's not you footing the bill after all, which leads to "why be careful with human lives, it's not me who gets sent to the gulag lmao".
