Was watching a video recently on Japan’s rise of Nationalism coming from the right, and remembered about some sort of big ol’ controversy in Japan because the Prime Minister was trying to remove a clause from the constitution that made Japan’s military pacifistic, only in use of self-defense.

At least from the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHJsoCAREsg&ab_channel=Vox), it seems that at least some of the sentiment the right has is to get Japan back to its imperial glory. So, let’s say Japan does strike down that clause, and is allowed to be aggressive. Could it even be expansionist? The closest landmass comprises of Russia, China, N./S. Korea. Two are major powers not to be fucked with, one is an ally, or at least an ally of an ally, and the other is a weak power with a power half-heartedly defending them. To the south are a few more allies of an ally, the Philippines and Thailand. Other than that, I am not sure of any powers supporting any south-east Asian nations, so japan may be able to overtake some of them.

let’s say Japan does decide to take over a few of these nations without support, would it still even be feasible? They’d probably get sanctions out the ass. So, in the end, is a new Japanese empire feasible at all? Or is it just a pipe dream for some of these political groups?

Japan could realistically in an offensive case, granted without superpower intervention, seize the kuril islands (crimea style) from Russia. the Philippines, other various pacific micro island chains, and if it was really ambitious and China stays out of the affair - the whole Korean peninsula.

Japan could defend itself from China in a defensive war if China does not use its nukes but an invasion of mainland China is unrealistic and impossible due to china's massive military.
other asian countries are also outside of a feasible occupational range from Japan to be very easily captured with Japans current military capabilities.

tldr; China no, but anyone else close by would get dumpstered if the world superpowers allowed it.
