I always thought any metropolis in any first world country displayed more buildings and skyscrapers than us, you know, people of the third world

It's easier to defend a building than a neighborhood

We live more in place like this, in my city there is no building higher than 6 floors and we are almost 1 milion people. Every little South American city with less than 5000 people is full of 20 floors buildings.

Because South Am cities were horribly planned or lost control of planning at some point, and most of them have cutoff the view to the sea, so the buildings got higher and higher cause there was a market for people who wanted a nice view, then someone (sometimes the same builder) buys the land nextdoor and builds another one in front of the last one, so now that building lost its value and can be bought cheaper and rebuilt higher, and etc, etc

Its a common "scam" like buying broken/ugly flats for fixing and resell
