The Orthodox church broke away because the Catholics became too greedy. There were only 2 holy cities still in Christian hands in 1054. Constantinople and Rome, the both churches were supposed to be equal, and yet the pope demanded to be recognised as superior to the patriarch of Constantinople.

actually the only patriarchate that still existed in the east at the time of the schism was Constantinople which proceeded to break with Rome and take everyone else with it. also the patriarch of Alexandria is currently not in communion with the eastern orthodox now and the patriarch of Antioch rejoined in communion with Rome as the patriarch of the Melkite Catholic church. Catholics have 2/5 sees, oriental Orthodox have 1/1, and the eastern orthodox have 2/5. not that any of this matters as the pentarchy was just Roman political horseshit with no basis in scripture or tradition, Constantinople didn't have any business becoming a patriarch in the first place and only did because it was the cap of Rome and all the other patriarchs protested it.
