This series is about how everyone has ignored the real enemy, the white walkers, and focused on fighting each other. I'm sure there's an alien invasion parallel there. It's what it has always been about since episode 1. You see Ned Stark about to execute a man who deserted the Nights Watch and he speaks of these beings beyond the wall. Ned writes it off as crazy talk and executes him. How it will unravel is the primary interest in the show. Either the White Walkers kill everyone or Jon Snow / Dany defeats them somehow. The prophecy hints it could be either one of them.
