Not sure how or why these threads are so common. Tipping culture is a fucking blessing, have you eaten out where they don't tip? Not only that, restaurants are competitive as fuck. Wether you wanna believe it or not, the prices are cheaper because the wage overhead for the servers is lower. What tipping lets you do is be the primary employer of your server which puts the motivation in the right place. An employer who doesn't HAVE to pay if you feel that bad about the service. Tipping was the American way of giving poorer people a chance at a middle class living. We used to look out for each other more. That's part of what made America great. Server here, and I'm calling horse shit on thihs. Cash tips must be reported at the end of every shift when you clock out. The place I work at has a system that actually averages what it thinks your cash tips were, based on cash payments you receive, and reports that amount to the employer unless you change it. This amount is accounted for when we get our W2s.

Basically, waitresses pretty themselves up and approach the table like a succubus, sucking the money right out from your wallet. They sweet talk you, especially if you are a nerd virgin. Also you'll never be able to return to a local restaurant if you don't tip. You'll forever be the 'asshole' and get some pretty shitty service. They can't get away with it at an established food chain though.

I work as a cook in a restaurant, and the servers don't do shit to earn their tips. In America the opening scene from Reservoir Dogs sums it up quite well. Every man throws a tip in except one, who says he doesn't tip unless theres a good reason to tip. The other men then try to shame him into tipping. In America most people tip well and often because if they didn't they might get shamed by others around him. After working as a cook who goes home with about 700 every two weeks having to look at servers who don't do shit walk out of a shift half as long as mine with 200 plus however much they make an hour makes my blood boil. From now on I'm only tipping if the server makes sure my glass is never empty and makes a little small talk.

One thing I've wondered is how does America get rid of tipping without a huge amount of wait staff getting fired/quitting? What if one day Americans just stopped tipping at every restaurant? Eventually the restaurants would have to pay the waitstaff a proper wage but they'll fight them tooth and nail before doing so.
