Because the underlying idea is that the wisdom of the masses are more likely to prevail over a single person or group. Basically think about a game show where people are asked a hard question and we see the majority vote for the correct one. However democracy has its limitations, limitations like collusion of interest groups, majority of masses are not thinking about what they are voting for.

That is why democratic republics are ideal. The US has both democratic rule and republic rule, a house and a senate. And the powers of the government are separated in a way that is equal yet conflicting.
