I don't know the story for Europe, but to my understanding, in the United States, the word Progressive was the term leftists and their underlying Marxists and communists used to describe themselves. Eventually, these people began to be called out, and the term on the whole was demonized. Many people knew what a "progressive" was, and thought their opinions were bad ideas.
They, the leftists, then switched to calling themselves "liberals." They over time as well began to be demonized, the term "liberal" became a word everyone thought poorly of and knew exactly who was being referred to by saying it, so they switched back to Progressives again.
They're switching their moniker over to "Democratic Socialist" now, since the Cold War is over. It's all a big revolving table of labels, meant to make them seem like they're something new, when in truth, they're just the same people as they were 4 years ago, believing the exact same things they did then.

Leftists are truly similar to the government depicted in 1984. They attempt to change the meaning of terms around, twist and hide in meaning and phrases, resort to doublespeak often, and argue sophistic arguments all meant to manipulate, hide, trick, self-deceive and delude.
They want whatever term they call themselves, to mean "hero. good guy. support me." That is the narrative they seek. When it doesn't work out that way, they slowly change their label, yet stay the same.

liberals are not leftists.

also the word "libertarian" is a stolen word. libertarians originally meant left wing and anti-authoritarian but the word "anarchist" was banned in france so they came up with a new word for it. the phrase "libetarian socialism" is closer to the original meaning than right wing "libertarianism" in the u.s.

USA has always goes for a 2party system although nothing in our constitution calls for it. Presidential system (as opposed to a Prime Minister based system) as well as probably our national "character" (Americans like to have clear winners and losers) pushes us toward a 2 party system. Having the citizens elect (somewhat directly) a president and having the two party system means that all the bargaining that takes place AFTER elections in a PM system happens BEFORE elections in our system.

For a long time BOTH the parties of Democrats and Republicans had their Progressive factions. This changed for the Republicans with Teddy Roosevelt. He was a successful progressive repubulican BUT he later ran against the Republican candidate (his ex-Vice President) because he didn't think his old VP was doing a good enough job with his legacy. Teddy created the Bull Moose party, a 3rd party. They/He were not successful but what he succeeded in doing was pulling most of the progressives out of the republican party.

Progressives also tainted the word "progressive" over the years; meanwhile, the word "liberal" had fallen out of favor in the popular vernacular of American politics, but not because the word "liberal" was tainted. It was just that everyone considered themselves a "liberal" (as in what we would call a "classical liberal" today) and it would be redundant to call themselves as such. By the time Franklin D. Roosevelt (a democrat, not a republican) came along "progressive" has become such a toxic word that started using the up until now, often unused term "liberal" to refer to his progressive politics. FDR's terminology switch is how "liberal" became to be synonymous with "progressive" in American politics.
