How is what the brain does different from what a machine would do? I think I could believe in the "it's just a copy" argument, but only if I end up concluding every momentary instance of regular brain based existence is itself part of a series of copies without any inherent continuity aside from informational similarity and proximity in space and time. And thoughts being next to each other in time from moment to moment wouldn't make them inherently connected as a singular identity any more than lining up rocks in a row would make those rocks share in an identity.
