It prevents states with large populations controlling everything.

The electoral college is one of the things that binds the states together. It allows smaller states or more rural states balance in the power structure. If you're going to get rid of one of the foundational organizational structures of the republic, you have to allow any state that chooses to opt out.

Each county worth X votes weighted by population. It's basically the same end result, but by breaking it down to a smaller level people in any one county won't feel like their voices are silenced by any other county.
