Dunno, after watching the thing I'm triggered a bit less... It's not really some new liberal bullshit as OP claims, she really had some mental illness. From the way she talked she really did sound happy in a way.

In her position it was either getting locked in the asylum and wait for some new kind of therapy to help her (but which could also never come) or just carry out this 'operation' and live freely, even blind. For me the important part is that she actually encourages other people with the same condition to wait until some treatment comes up, so it's not like she's promoting this behaviour.
