1) Schumann resonances exist, but they're not a lossless (or even REMOTELY lossless) resonance effect like what you would need to successfully, accurately, and economically transmit power through the lower ionosphere

2) TE modes *are* transverse waves. They're not a planar superposition like free space waves, but they're still transverse, just like all EM waves. Tesla was an advocate of "non-Hertzian" waves and thought he could use some kind of 'longitudinal EM wave' to overcome the problems with the resonance model, he was wrong
