Maduro wants to give up their government's shares in Citgo which is a giant energy company here in the states, they own three refineries, nine pipelines, and 48 product terminals across the country.

The country he wants to give those shares to as collateral for a loan is Russia, so the Senate Committe on Foreign Investment has been chimping out HARD these past two days, particulary Marco Rubio, REEing irl and trying to get the ball moving on sanctions to decapitate Maduro's economic base (the oil economy).

For how badly Chavez and Maduro try and force the anti-US meme, their country is economically tied to the US almost completely, that means we have the means to really hurt their Socialist regime if we wanted.

The US will only Intervene if Brazil and Colombia are on board. A full meltdown of the Venezualan state is going to be bad for everyone. Refugees will swamp the neighboring areas, and ultimately try and get to the USA via Puerto Rico. It will be Mediterranean Boat People in the Caribbean.

If the Police and the Military remain loyal to Maduro, there is nothing short of an external invasion that will oust the Commies. Venezuela's people are disarmed.

Or it could create a literal post-apocolyptic scenario (which it would, US sanctions on their energy industry would absolutely decapitate their economy over night leading to a myriad of issues such as widespread starvation which would snowball into a humanitarian crisis affecting tens of millions of people)

If this was the 60's, we'd have already sent the Marines. Unfortunately its (current year) so we can't do that. We need support from other South American countries, but that will be hard.

Brazil's Government is in Chaos over their corruption scandals, and Colombia is just pulling out of its civil war. Chile has the capability of doing something, but they are on the other side of the Continent, Argentina is secretly commie themselves, Ecuador is openly commie and supports maduro, Peru doesn't care, and Paraguay is Paraguay.
