Damn, I can't find the exact place I read that, but the prisoners released would have to interact with the Polish government (Auschwitz was located on annexed-land inside of Poland's formal borders) and also most likely the Polish resistance movement. The Polish resistance movement was absolutely huge inside the camp not too long after it was established. They even managed to smuggle in a fucking radio and transmit information to their friends outside the camp. Lots of mentions about how horrible the conditions were and that people were dying, but absolutely NO mention of a concentrated effort to mass-exterminate people at Auschwitz. Certainly Jews were singled out for harsh treatment and often died as a result, but the purpose of the camp wasn't to kill Jews. This is all laid out in a book written by a member of the Polish resistance who was actually at Auschwitz, called Fighting Auschwitz or something like that.

They had several glass cases that were filled with items of dead Jews, like big mound of purses, another of shoes, etc. One thing I noticed that didn't make sense is that it looked like all of the items had written on them identifying information.
