The budget of AAA games has grown exponentially. a game can sell one million copies and be considered an economic failure. The rise of microtransactions and DLC is a backhanded way of recouperating losses in an psychologically acceptable way, a way that raising the price of the standard game by ten or twenty $/£ would not be tolerated.

The gaming market is moving towards incremental increases in power. Sony have suggested the PS5 may be a step up, the way the PS4 Pro was on the PS4. Same with the Xbox One X, which may be MS's last console.

Two questions must then be asked.

1. Is this sustainable as a business model? I would say not. People can afford phones because they pay them off incrementally. Consoles are a huge upfront investment. So will Sony and Nintendo rent you their hardware, until you've paid it off? Possibly, if they desire to have incremental upgrades, as the PS4 pro and the New 3ds XL suggest.

2. If this model is not sustainable, are there any indicators that this model will adjust to preserve itself? I would say no. Indie gaming lacks the ability to support itself, instead relying on Steam with good games drowning in the garbage.

I am a full-time VR developer that targets the Vive. You're are 100% correct. The only reason it hasn't blown up more is because it's expensive to get a VR rig running (the headset + powerful PC to run it). And the first-gen headsets themselves are still pretty bulky and low-res. In the next 2-3 years it's going to explode. Once you've gamed in VR there's no going back to a normal display.

It takes a lot of money (millions or even tens of millions) and a lot of time (usually 1.5-3 years) to make a AAA game. The VR market is still very small (probably around 1M-1.5M Vives + Rifts out there) and has only existed for about a year (so not enough time to develop a AAA title).

Give it about 0.5-1.5 years and you're going to see an explosion of AAA VR content, along with VR headset sales.

Regardless, no matter how short or repetitive the game may or may not be...I'm definitely going to buy it. The concept itself is so rare & intriguing , i'm ready to be immersed in this world. From what i understand we're talking about a 5h or 7h long game max...So half the price.

But it's not the length that matters. But the artistic style , the whole world behind it..etc...

I've played Uncharted 4. Good game. (though Uncharted 2 is still my favorite). But i'm getting kinda tired of this franchise.
