ITT: means to preserve data (((they))) dont like.
Particularly now that YT has banded together with ADL and other shills, what ways are there to make sure that important data (in any form) stays online?
I know of IPFS and Retroshare. In a thread yesterday others mentioned mastodon and diaspora.
- IPFS: content based adressing: works for everything. As long as anyone in the network has the whole file and you have its hash (digital fingerprint so to say) the file is accessible. Its really just the bare bones of a system, feels like telegraphing files sometimes. Not because of speed (its rather fast compared to GNUnet and Freenet) but because its so primitive.
- Retroshare: Not (just) for filesharing, I found the distributed message board and email functionality best. Looks good and more polished than I expected.
- Mastodon: Basically a distributed twitter. I was a bit disappointed by it since I do not really like twitter.
- Diaspora: A full distributed social network. Never tried it out myself however.
If anyone cares, my Retroshare ID is:
