The reason college is so expensive in the US is that everybody and their dad's rectum goes to college, regardless of if they should be there or not. In order to attend a public 4 year university, it should be a requirement that you take and pass a College Algebra class in your first semester. It was a laughably easy test and you could take it every year if you failed. If you passed, then you were exempt.

I was in a senior level computer science course at a public university years ago. One of the first major assignments involved reading from a text file character by character, then doing some more advanced stuff with those characters once you had them. The professor ended up giving an extension for that assignment, because almost everybody complained about how hard it was to read characters from a text file in C.

...A month later, we had another assignment. It involved reading from a text file line by line. The professor ended up giving us an extension because so many people complained that reading from a text file is difficult in C.
