T-34 was the best tank. The issue was soviet crews were poorly trained. It was more reliable than any German medium or heavy tank. It could handle Russian mud and winter unlike any German tank. It was very simple to manufacture. The one thing that German tanks were better for is they had 5 man crews instead of 4 man crews in soviet tanks. This allowed for a dedicated main gunner. The Panzer IV (F2 and later) had much greater effective range and penetration on the main gun along with better crew comfort (which is important to crew performance). By the end of the war the t-34 was great especially the 85's. Reliability and manufacturability are two of the most important stats for tanks in this war. Stalin had just purged 1/3 of his officer core he suspected of disloyalty. They hadn't rolled out deep battle doctrine and were still going with WW1 doctrines. So stalin wasn't readying for war he was no where near it which is why blitzkrieg rolled through the soviet union all the way to Moscow. Nazi Germany began with 6 million axis troops on that border including his allies and Red army had 2 million on that border. It was Hitler that prepared for war not stalin.
