Do you ever envy people like hunter-gatherers or those living simple, if difficult agrarian lives as farmers? They focus on perpetuating their own existence, and although their lives are hard they seem happy and not encumbered with the complexities of modern technologically and politically, economically, etc. advanced societies.

Yes and no. Modern technology, for all its flaws, has also done some pretty amazing things. There's benefits and drawbacks. It's nice knowing that if I randomly have a pulmonary embolism or something as long as someone calls an ambulance in time my chances of surviving are high. Shit happens out in the middle of nowhere and you're fucked.
