Christianity is almost extinct except for in name. Its basically the only religion where you can do and act whatever way you please and still say you are Christian just because you believe in it. Much of the clergy are plants. There's no two ways around it. The archbishop of Canterbury would have been deemed a heretic and excommunicated just a few decades ago for the things he has come off with. I would hazard a guess that most ministers banished from the church are done so because of their refusal to ignore doctrine (this happened in the Anglican church recently I think) rather than sin.

I've noticed that many of the women I've met are incapable of understanding absolute truths (i.e truth that exists outside of their own personal experience) and that this colors their view of religion.

For instance, I made an offhand comment to one female acquaintance that ISIS fighters were actually just literally applying the principles of the Quran, a book they believe to be ultimately written by God himself, so they are less culpable for their atrocities than the Quran and the religion at large. She became very angry at this suggestion, and responded that this obviously wasn't true because most Muslims did not behave as ISIS fighters do. I responded that she is correct that most Muslims aren't ISIS fighters, but it didn't change the fact that ISIS fighters were just accurately applying the source text of their religion. She closed the conversation by saying that if only a small number of people did this, the source text wasn't the religion.

Most religions are based on texts that their followers believe (or are supposed to believe) to be the word (or ordained from the word) of God - an absolute being superior to humans. However, to her, the real religion was whatever the popular interpretation of that text was. She could not conceive of the idea of a larger truth than that. I can understand this perspective, because we can't truly know whether or not God is real, but the fact that she struggled to conceptualize an abstract god really clicked with me.

Women think differently then men - it can't be a coincidence that men have dominated most religions since the dawn of civilization. Women are more socially and emotionally inclined - men think in more objective terms. This has an impact on how each sex perceives faith. The phenomenon of female religious leaders interpreting their faiths in ways so novel, but in keeping with modern values, that the source text becomes basically meaningless (Muslim lesbian wedding, atheist priests, etc.) seems only natural.
