The main idea here is that a population of any animal requires some type of effort/driving force to progress, and when it becomes too easy, things spiral out.

I have a personal rule that when I am out with friends at a pub or a cafe I will never even put my phone on the table, but if I am there alone I will definitely stare at the screen because I will be reading something. Well, the Behavioral Sink theory was the chief inspiration to that movie. What message then, can one glean, if this was a basis for the concept of the rats in the story?

That also being said. The reading I've done on this so far suggests a strong correlation to a lack of pressure and self correcting activities which collapse a populace until it reaches a sustainable lower level.

However, this then leads to a biological question:
If the pressures of population result in the lowering of sperm (As we recently saw an article indicating sperm motility is down 50% in males from well off countries), the question is, what causes that lowering of sperm specifically? Would it be some hormonal trigger based upon proximity? Would it be some genetic defect which manifests and spreads out? Or is it something pre programmed in that serves as a safe guard that we simply haven't discovered yet?

The implications are terrifying. And suggest that our best bet moving forward would be to scatter into small family groups and begin long term colonization of other worlds.
