I did work experience in an old persons home and it was a mixture of australians, chinese, japanese, vietnamese, greeks, italians, lebanese etc.

My parents didn't put their parents in a nursing home, and I won't be putting mine in one either.

My father cared for his father - up to and including wiping his ass - right up until the day he died. In his own home.

His sister did the same for their mother.

And I'll do the same for them. Not because of how I feel about them - truth is I still have some resentment toward my parents over shit from my youth and I rarely speak to them.

I'll do it because I loved my grandparents, and they did right by them.

As for myself, I want to be in a nursing home. I've seen enough bedridden old people to know that it doesn't really matter much where the bed is.

I remember when I was a young adult I was still in a phase where I hated my parents because of how they messed up raising me. I told myself (and was serious) that when they got older I would just put them in a nursing home and move on.

Basically I got older, went through a lot, saw how much my parents loved me (they weren't perfect, messed up in some major ways raising me, bu they tried their best), and I ended up forgiving them of their shortcomings. Now I would gladly take them into my home or future home as long as need be, even if that meant for the rest of their lives and even if they turned into the most annoying/cranky old people on the planet.

Family comes first and they are the closest thing you can have in this world. Even if you can't stand them, remember God knows more than you about what your parents sacrificed raising you and their deep love and He will bless you for having patience and bearing with them.

Actually some retirement homes are better for old people. My mom is basically a prisoner in her own house because her eye sight isn't good enough to drive. So she spends way too much time alone becuase the house is in the suburbs.
Meanwhile my aunt is in a home with lots of group activities, social events, leatures, new friends nearby. And the family can visit a lot
I feel it actully makes a lot more sense to be in a home in cases like that.

I am just starting out in my nursing career but I have seen somethings. I'm 31, male and am still waiting for my registration.

Briefly I was in a cardiac cath lab and got to see all the various TAVI's, TOES and various other procedures. Stents are very, very cool.

There was this one woman who was like 93 who went in for a freaking TAVI. At 93. What do you expect happend to such a woman? Well she died on the table because her aortic valve just crumbled when they attempted to place the new one.

Any experienced nurse/doctor/radiologist could have seen that was going to happen.

As a result, the nurses and treating Dr had to watch this woman die from an unnecessary procedure. Its like seeing 90 yr olds get a fucking Hip replacements. They spend the next 4 weeks in bed, get aspiration pneumonia and die as a result.

Not a useful investment at all.

It is almost impossible to have a senile decrepit parent living with you / your family in the same apartment in a city and very difficult and frankly unhelpful in a suburban house. With working people the old parent would be alone most of the time anyway. This would only work if the person is merely old but otherwise in good shape physically and cognitively. If they need help and their mind is going like sands through the hourglass, a nursing home is by far a better option.

I'd rather be abandoned in a nursing home myself than be a millstone around the neck of my children. I mean, most people in nursing homes are not just old but old and in bad shape. If they were in OK shape, the nursing home would be nothing but an old people's hotel as far as they life in general is concerned. But old people like that tend to live in their own apartment rather than a nursing home. I also wouldn't want my children to remember me as a drooling and witless shadow of the person I once was.

Times are tough, and some parents treat their kids more like tenants than family. Families used to occupy the same home until people died, it was understood that family was a generational thing and becoming 'man of the house' actually meant something.

We've lost that grounding, people move to much, and recklessly spend on houses they can barely afford for status. Then when their children need support or housing, instead of acting like family the boomer parent responds with "yeah but what are you going to do for me?" Like family is some kind of contract for which the terms expired.

Shit like that is why you wind up in shitty home 30 years later, because you taught your children that self indulgence is more important than family. You wanted to be a landlord instead of a parent so now in your old age you get to be a liability instead of an elder.

I'm 20 and still live with my parents, but only because I'm saving up to actually buy a house instead of wasting away in poverty in a shitty apartment. I've already put 10k towards my (future) house. Of course, I also lift, do chores, and take care of my dying father, because I'm not a useless cretin.

We'll just be paying it forward to the boomers when we pick out the shittiest nursing homes to throw them into. :^)
