A giant 37 kg lamb of a dog but her visual appearance is enough to make people think twice.

It's all about controlling your body language to not look nervous. You can feel as nervous as you want inside your head but your posture is what the dogs read. I have had dogs that have sent people to the ER and were scary as fuck. But after 2 years of this not one has full on bitten me because I made sure I had confident body language. Also, studying their body language is just as important, don't try to pet them unless they ask to be pet, even then watch body language to see if it changes, if they stiffen or freeze even for a moment. Stop interacting with it immediately.

Those traits you mentioned don't come in all german shepherds. You have many breeders that have toned down those aspects of the dogs to make them more family friendly.

Their are different types of german shepherds from looks to lines.

For instance the red and tan dogs are more of a show line which can have poor genetics and doesn't have the temperament to carry out those things you have listed.

Where as working line dogs often are black or sable with good genetics and have guarding instincts in them. They can also be trained as attack dogs.

I don't believe dogs of any breed will automatically attack on instinct. What I mean is they won't just decide that if a person has entered their territory they are a threat and should be attacked.

With training yes this can be accomplished but that takes time and must be maintained. This also depends on the dogs drive, a dog that just wants to be a couch potato and has no drive won't excel at training to be an attack dog.

Their are standards out their for ideal temperaments in dogs however it always gets tricky when looking for a protection dog. Usually the qualities you need in a protection dog make for bad temperaments. It is rare for example to find a German Shepherd that can be trained to be both a protection dog and a therapy dog for children. This however is a goal i always have in mind when picking a puppy.

Pain tolerance is a big one. German Shepherds unfortunately tend to fail this miserably. This is also why Labradors tend to make good family pets, because they tolerate pain and don't over react to someone stepping on their tail or tugging their ear and send you to the ER for it.

Recovery: After the dog is startled by something like a loud noise, how long does it take them to recover? Do they freeze in place and bark? Do they hide and not come out for several minutes at a time? Do they investigate? Do they bite the object?

Willingness to follow humans/trust their judgement: After dog has been startled by something will they trust you to go up to the item when you interact with it and encourage them over? If they don't and continue to be scared I would fail them immediately, this dog will never recover in a situation where you are telling them this kid is ok or this is my new girlfriend etc etc.

Honestly this is such a large topic I would be up all night listing everything, those three however are the big ones I look for.

You can instantly notice if someone is good with dogs and knows how they "think" . I employ 2 guys who both did little with dog training before but they were both extremly good with dogs in general and were very eager to learn.

So just go in, be yourself and be interested and just show your interest for dogs. They dont often dismiss people instantly, first they look at how they are. Youll be fine.

If you have a fascination for dogs and are eager to learn and motivated I dont think youll be dismissed.

I've never had problems finding healthy GSs, if you know the right breeders, you're fine. You don't want to buy a GS unless the breeder is known and has good references. I do agree that there's sadly a lot of GSs with health issues, but there's plenty of healthy ones to be found. And, they won't be cheap - my two monsters are AKC, from good, solid breeders, and cost $700 each. GSs aren't whim pets, you have to do some research before you buy one, or adopt one.

1. What breed, breeds are you looking at?

Try to see if you can get the dog to follow you, call them, clap your hands and gesture to them to follow you while walking away. If the puppy gets underfoot the entire way, you have a velcro dog (not always a bad thing but could lead to sep anxiety). also keep an eye on the dogs body posture throughout this, is their tail tucked?


Pain tolerance: pick the puppy up, place one of it's toes between your fingers and VERY GENTLY put pressure or pinch the dog's toe. Do this and count to ten, for each second pinch just slightly harder. If the puppy screams from just 1-3 sec. I fail the dog. Ideally I look for dogs that are about a 7-10 on this especially if there will be children in the home.

Once this is over, place the puppy on the ground and try to see if the puppy will cuddle up to you and "forgive what just happend" you can do soft talking and encouragement to solicit this. If they give you kisses and cuddle you have a winner. If they will have nothing to do with you or bite you they fail.

All of this should be done without any of the other puppies or dogs in the room and ideally in a place the puppy has never been before. This also need to happen the first time the puppy meets you at about 7-8 weeks of age.

i didn't say anything about kids, i have no problems with malamutes and huskies with kids. However with INFANTS which is what I said I have seen way too many of them steal them out of their crib and carry them around the house like a puppy and unintentionally hurting the baby. This happened with a Malamute that tried to take the baby outside of the dog door and picked it up and slammed its head on the door and killed the baby. if anyone does have an infant with one of these dogs in the house they need to be extra vigilant about keeping them in a crate anytime baby is sleeping so this does not happen but it only takes once for someone to fuck up or forget to shut the door or put he dog away.

Former GS owner here. Awesome fucking dogs, truly. But they are being overbred to shit right now and unfortunately we ended up with a "bad" one. He had just turned 3. My 9 year old son came home with his friend, a friend our GS had met and played with 100 times.

Well on this particular day the dog just fucking snapped as soon as he set foot inside and attacked the poor kid, pinning him into a corner. I happened to be about 20 feet away and was able to intervene before it got REAL bad, but he had already bit the kid twice in that short time.

I put him down. Not an easy thing to do, but I couldn't take the chance of him severely mauling or killing someone - especially a kid.

The vet said he probably had a brain tumor or something due to their extensive over/inbreeding, and that stuff like this would usually surface at the 2-3 year age mark.

Got my daughter a GS puppy when she turned 7. She can step on its tail, pull its ears, yank its fur. Nothing. I raise my dog in my 50 sq meter flat and it's all fine. My job allows me to take him out a lot though, there is a forest a few miles away from my place. I take him out 3-4 times a week for a 2 hours walk without a leash. There are lots of dogs, most of whom are well-educated, so he's become fearless and well-educated himself.

A house with a garden is sometimes a prison for the dog, if the owner believes that the garden is sufficient and that the dog doesn't need socializing with other dogs during long walks in the wild.

I was reluctant about getting a doggo in my flat but my wife eventually convinced me. I had never had a dog before, and those few months have been the best months in my life.

Consider getting a dog ASAP !
