Let me tell you how we had it here in the Baltics, and keep in mind that this was the most technologically advanced and wealthy part of the Union (also the least loyal).
If you wanted to buy a car you had to register in a line for a certain model or make, and then you had to wait for your turn to get reviewed by the automobile distribution comission.
The only way to actually reach the front of the line within a year or two was through cheating, e.g. bribing the officials with goods, alcohol, or just money.
And ove you get to the reviewing process they ask you for specifics, like the colour, engine type, fuel tank size, and so on.
But most likely you would get the wrong one, as the one you wanted was not available, so they chose a diffrent one for you themselves.
And car parts were also highy regualted, you couldn't just go buy a spare steering column for example, you had to go to specific repair shop where they rebuilt cars from scratch.
That is where you got the parts illegally, through bribery again. A bottle of vodka was the main currency back then.
Also jeans and any tapes of non-soviet choir music were considered a luxury, and you could get into trouble for getting caught acqiring them.
Jobs were not chosen, but were issued. If you didn't show up the local milicia would come and drag you to it, and if you tried to aviod them: it's prison time for you.

Former Soviet union citizen here. I traveled around the USSR due to my mother being a communist party secretary and father a high ranking military officer. For us life was really great we received extra benefits from the socialist system such as higher wages, better healthcare and so forth but the average folk was quite miserable. Generally Russians miss the superpower status and great security/stability in daily life not communism as a whole. You can ask some questions but remember that people view it differently and having connections, money or certain skills were extremely important for a good life (not much different than now but you currently have way more options).

My family was educated middle class, and according to them it wasn't that bad at all if you've accepted the goy life. This actually massively varied based on where you lived. Moscow obviously had much higher QoL that some middle in the fucking nowhere. Also it depended on who you knew. TL;DR: you could live great pretty much anywhere if you applied yourself to it.


Situation in Republics adjacent to Russia
One thing that you will often hear from misinformed retards is that some or other republic got oppressed. That's bullshit. Everyone got treated equally shitty. Another complaint often heard is that Stalin tried to kill millions of Ukrainians by somehow artificially creating famine.
