The hollow spiritual emptiness of their post modernist lives becomes too much to bear so they want to turn to religion, but they can't turn to the religion they have spent all of this time criticizing (Christianity) without feeling, and more importantly appearing to their peers, like idiots. So whereas 40 years ago they would go bare foot and follow the "wisdom" of some yogi huckster, today they embrace an Eastern religion that is anathema to all of their progressive beliefs.
