Shuffling across the chamber, Mr. McCain convened with Democrats, informing them of his choice. “They can read my lips,” he said to laughs, fearing his hand would be tipped ahead of time from inside the gallery.

At one point, the senator joined Ms. Collins and Ms. Murkowski, telling them they had done the right thing.

“We talked about how if anyone knew about doing the right thing it was John McCain,” Ms. Collins recalled. “It was very moving.”

By 1:30 a.m., Mr. McCain returned to the middle of the floor, a few feet from where he had spoken of bipartisanship and comity on Tuesday. Mr. McConnell stared straight ahead, motionless, as the Republican promise fell away.

Mr. McCain held out his arm, waiting to be recognized once more, and dropped his thumb.

Are you kidding me? I'm not sure if you're posting b8 at this point. Deposing Assad has been the man's literal crusade for a decade anon... After years of failure, he had finally toiled away, spending untold millions of debt bucks on funneling weapons, supplies, training and intel into FSA. And they were taking back Raqqa from Isis (or at least, that's what was being reported by western media). Trump just cut all his funding like last week, and Raqqa was swept through by Assad within 48 hours.

McCain was perfectly willing to work with Drumpf on healthcare like two fucking weeks ago anon. This verlly little to do with reputation, McCain isn't even sane at this point. Don't be fucking simple.

McCain got this money for the rebels originally because he told congress he was confident SDF could "retake" Raqqa. The chance was dead long before Trump stopped financing, that's exactly why he is pulling the plug. The last hope died when FSA and affiliates lost Aleppo, everything following that defeat have been dragged out death throes, splits and infighting etc, and it's about time someone stops funding. I doubt McCain would have put any greater thought into the decision.

I just reacted to you stating the FSA was involved in Raqqa, which they are not. Also that Assad took Raqqa in 48 hours, which they did not since Assad is not involved in Raqqa either. The kurds who are involved still get US aid, and they have not taken the city yet either.

Welp, I didn't read that last sentence of your post, my bad.

I read the article. It talks about defection, mentions that fighting is still going on in Raqqa, and that the actual syrian army (Assad) has been allowed to go around their flank towards DeZ, am I missing something?
>>
>>135454891
This is just the start of the trend desu. They have no choice but to defect to the government at this point if they want to keep fighting. Since their funding is getting cut, and considering that (if there is any resources going to them by the US) our generals ordered them to no longer fight the legitimate government forces and just Isis from this point, the old NATO/Israel/Saudi agenda is as good as dead. I've seen people who wanted Assad gone admit this. This is victory for Assad, in Raqqa and elsewhere. It's a victory for the west too, the common people at least, as we won't be going to war in Syria.
>>
>>135455474
>our generals ordered them to no longer fight the legitimate government forces and just Isis from this point,
The kurds have since the start been the main recipients of US arms and have also since the start had uneasy cooperation and a truce with government forces, outside of a few lone incidents they haven't fought Assad at any point throughout this war. They even get aid from Russia.

Those who are openly hostile to Assad are smaller factions that since Aleppo have become increasingly irrelevant and divided on the ground, they are not a major player in Raqqa. The US never ordered the rebels around either, only the kurds.

The SDF, literally "the Kurds" were given the means to fight exclusively because NATO/Israel/Saudi's were looking to depose Assad. Most of the rebel groups, including the SDF, haven't had any legitimate alliance with the government, and according to all the propaganda in the news here, they've been wanting to depose Assad from the get-go as well.

The U.S. also literally told them to not fight Assad within the last week, which is a change up from prior policy. http://www.cnn.com/2017/07/26/politics/us-syrian-allies-isis-assad/index.html

The SDF is a joke made up by the US so they can tell their voter sheep that they are supporting 'democratic' forces. The YPG is the major player, and if we remove them from the equation the SDF would be less than worthless on the ground. And the kurds have never been armed to fight Assad directly, as they have been cooperating from the start (with SAA enclaves within their territories among other things).

The SDF they talk about in that article are the rebel pockets in the south. Those groups were armed against Assad, that is true. They have nothing to do with the kurd though, or Raqqa for that matter, and I doubt them dropping support for some groups in the south having anything to do with defections from other groups in the north that are not at war with Assad.

>The SDF is a joke made up by the US so they can tell their voter sheep that they are supporting 'democratic' forces

The entire operation feels like it was formed by some marketing department. The "values" they were fighting for, their strategy, their alleged female-inclusive leadership. It all stinks of marketing, and that's why I said that imo, the anti-Assad intelligence community (who were caught in Syria aiding rebels) were trying to meme a coalition effort into existence.

>They have nothing to do with the kurd though, or Raqqa for that matter, and I doubt them dropping support for some groups in the south having anything to do with defections from other groups in the north that are not at war with Assad.

They were given support under the premise that they could take Raqqa "back" in time. This is what McCain said just earlier this year:

>“We will take Mosul,” he said. “We will take Raqqa. And we’d better have strategies as to how to handle those places once we have won it."

Now, granted, he is fucking crazy. As is US policy in the reason. But that city in particular is very important to the shills in the intelligence community. And SDF is a big part of the force that's doing the fighting in Raqqa now. The same rebels that have no more US money being funneled into their """agenda""", and they are defecting to the government. At least, those who can are, and it's only just started.

Anyway, this whole thing stems from the original point that McCain is trying to fuck over Trump for his Syria decision. He was more than willing to work with the rest of the GOP on healthcare until Trump did this. He also now wants to help the dems with immigration, as a total betrayal to Trump and the GOP. He is that butthurt over this Syria decision, because he knows the money was vital to the agenda. Or, at least that's the conclusion he had come to. Personally, I think it does derail the agenda to depose Assad, which was still viable until last week.

>Yes. So there are two separate efforts here or multiple efforts. The CIA program was fighting forces that are aligned with Assad, the president of Syria.
>The Pentagon was backing - or is backing and continues to do so - fighters, including Kurds, that are fighting Islamic State and other terrorist organizations.

They have not cut support to the groups fighting for control of Raqqa, there are still weapons and supplies flowing in, and american special forces are on the ground with them.

>But that city in particular is very important to the shills in the intelligence community. And SDF is a big part of the force that's doing the fighting in Raqqa now.
Not the same parts of the SDF that lost funding. A big part of US interest in my view would be to counter Assad and russian legitimacy. Putin sold the war on stopping IS, if the US turned out to be the one responsible for defeating all the major islamist strongholds that would undermine Syria.
Not to mention securing control of the syria-iraq border which they could use as leverage, just like they already have done by setting up bases within Syria on the lebanese border and attacking any SAA that comes too close (ie. unofficial invasion).

>He is that butthurt over this Syria decision
I have a hard time believing that but I don't know the man. Wouldn't be any worse or less petty than whatever reason he had to sabotage Trump though.

I knew there were separate agendas. It still would have played into the hands of the people who wanted to depose Assad, if it became a viable option again. It was basically a surety before the election here, that we were going in again. I know we have a lot of soldiers there now, but it could have been so much worse than it is right now anon.

>A big part of US interest in my view would be to counter Assad and russian legitimacy.

I think you're totally correct. But this isn't something that the nationalist political elements wanted here. They wanted to depose Assad, much the same as they did with Qaddafi, with no care of what happened afterward. I think that (and I've noticed this on twitter) that even government officials highly supportive of the war efforts in Syria, and by that I mean all the war efforts, they sort of accepted defeat during this last week. A lot of generals and retired intel people have admitted that there was never an exit strategy, and that's why it's not a great idea. They are demoralized now, especially McCain.

>Wouldn't be any worse or less petty than whatever reason he had to sabotage Trump though

It's been an accumulative sort of thing, but this really pushed him over. He's always been more of a moderate (read neocon warmonger puppet) politically. But he knows that we wanted healthcare reform, and he knows that we don't want amnesty. Now, he's fighting Trump on both topics. It wasn't anywhere near this bad until Trump cut the shekel flow to McCain's friends.

Trump doesn't need to directly fund terrorists like Obama when he can do it by proxy through the Saudis. The general public knows so little about the middle east that anything we do by proxies through the Saudis will trick the American public but not (thankfully) the international community.

Also I think McCain might've done what he did to get into democrat circles in order to spy for Trump. That's my 4D chess hunch. The dems will fawn over him now.

Honestly, I'm convinced that McCain voted "no" as a big fuck you to the GOP for needing to drag him away from his family and medical treatments for a week in order to spend a stressful week of his life working with 50 (or up to 99) people he hates in order to get a fucking bill drafted that only stood a roughly 51% chance of actually getting through.

McCain's kind of an old-school republican, I think his thinking is basically "if you couldn't get one single fucking Democrat to vote for it even though most of them are on the healthcare industry's payroll, it doesn't need to be passed."

Honestly, if you look at McCain vote-by-vote, he's pretty ideologically consistent across his entire time in the Senate.

Problem is that the GOP's swung further right to get on the populist vote and McCain didn't really go anywhere.

I mean, the fucking scar on McCain's brow sort of blows a hole in that theory.

Why go through with all that, even to fake it with make-up, if you're not actually sick? Literally, all McCain would have had to do is have his staffers "leak" stories indicating that he's been diagnosed, the media would've eaten it up just like they did, and he could have gone about his normal business.

Sometimes the most simple explanation really is the most fitting.
