I fell the musicianship aspect of the craft was far more important.

I grew up rather well-off and was blessed to have made my favorite "toy" in the house at the age of 3 be the 16' Steinway Grand Piano. I just self-taught all the riffs I heard on TV or the radio and once my parents figured out what was happening they shit bricks and tried to get me with many 'instructors"... all of whom I totally BUCKED btw. But I did learn how to read music and that helped.

As far as the engineering aspect goes... I can't say DON'T go learn from a pro... because, honestly, it's A LOT of very technical and physics oriented stuff. I just happened to have gotten in on the ground floor of digital and MIDI production. I seriously mean that... my first MIDI rig was an Amiga running Octa-MED tracker and an Atari-ST running the 1st version of Cubase. I kinda grew up IN IT as it all developed. (I currently write VST plug ins and what not for side $$$) but I wind up giving most of them away for free just because... why be a jew when no-one's gonna license it but it'll help other people make cool noises?

That is the closest you'll ever get to "socialistic" behavior from me. I look at it as only helping my fellow guild members. Only those who put in the work ahead of timme will even know how to use or what to do with my plugs so... there it is.

That kind of drive is what im guessing how you got to where you are today. Producers today are so fortunate to have what they have, yet many aren't much better than the next guy.
