The most likely explination is a tactical one. You can't pull up to the promise land with a bunch of ex-slaves. They had to wait for the next generation to come up. A generation ready to fight and fully briefed in the fact that they had claim to a land they never saw. A generation that only knew the harsh desert and had no better option than making a path for themselves.

It's a bit more complicated but you got the gist of it correct. The early jews were polytheistic and Yahweh was a war god, eventually the sect that focused on him managed to take over, most probably around the Babylonian exile when a warrior god had a strong appeal and they rewrote their shit to say they were always monotheistic.
