In any case, it's not that the Nazis were any less fanatical and brutal, it's that Germany they seized still had powerful elites which limited Hitler's power, while in Russia former elite ran away or was murdered, and Bolshevik power was absolute. They had to compromise far less.

Degenerate materialist? From what I've read/heard of him, he focuses mostly on the ideological superstructure and on psychoanalysis instead of the material base, as is common amongst neo-Marxists.
