Even if you were a Patrician there's pretty much nothing you can do. You're talking about thousands of years of history and all sorts of developments over which you have no control separating you from the present.

The only way to have any sort of enduring legacy is to 1) Kill someone really important before they can do whatever they plan to do or 2) Become a man of letters influential enough to change history via your insider knowledge of the future. But doing both of those would change history in unpredictable ways that may actually make things worse. Kill Caesar before the Gallic wars and maybe the Republic lives longer, but Rome may not ever grow as influential and powerful as it became and then ALL of history would be radically different.

The Military had a very very important role, the more it grew (late roman law) the more unstable the empire became. Why? because it meant whoever had the loyalty of the soldiers ((mercenaries)) could become Ceasar. This meant that a lot of money went to pay the soldiers salaries, most of it actually, because a ceasar that didnt pay the soldiers was a dead Ceasar.
And all of this considering how weak were the stablished rules of legitimacy to be succed Ceasar(they tried to reinforce it in the IV century after Christ with the title of Imperator but it was too late).
