The original roman calendar where we get the names for the months only had 10 months with some dysfunctional amount of uncounted days after december for the duration of winter. March 1st has been and always will be the actual first day of the year. The annual calendar describes the relation of the sun to the earth. If you want the start of it to be an equinox, that's fine, that's what astrology does too. Currently our annual calendar start date is pinned to a solstice.
