As for my Thyroid condition. I actually originally had Graves disease, which is Hyperthyroidism, the course of treatment ultimately ended with my thyroid being destroyed and unable to produce the required TSH, thus the 1 pill a day.

The common way is to blame your problems on whatever you can that absolves you of any fault, which generally is something medical.

For instance, asthma is a common one. The US military doesn't really recognize asthma as a genuine condition, since the screening process before joining measures your ability to breathe. But some people may have had asthma diagnoses in childhood or what have you, then quit later claiming it was their asthma that stopped them being able to perform.

On the other hand, I've seen it the other way, too. For instance I knew a guy in boot camp who had LSD flashbacks that caused him to not be able to train any longer. So underlying medical conditions are reasonable for excluding from military service.
