Marxists delude themselves by pretending that communism isn't the methods of Marxists, or the hoped-for result of Marxism, but it's a combination of both, Marx's methods producing Marx's results.
This has never happened, and never will happen, so it allows them to say that factions who perfectly followed Marx's proscriptions still weren't communists, not because they failed to implement Marx's 10 points, but because they failed to make Marx's 10 points produce a stateless, classless society

they were aiming for it, but encountered the same problems that all who try to achieve the impossibility that ""true"" communism is. yet decided to still try to pave a road to the unobtainable, a road made from broken bodies and blood. EVERYONE that aims for ""true"" communism or ""true"" socialism will walk down the same path, and if the profuse suffering, mountains of corpses and the insanity of its operations are not good enough arguments against even considering "trying" again then that person can not possibly understand what the true consequences of those systems were.

The Soviet Union was what happens when a revolutionary faction wins pledging that they will enact 'real communism'. If they really did that, it would entail abolishing the government and revolutionary wave. If they did that, their commune-nation would just get steamrolled by the very factions they just fought to take it from. They have no choice but to keep the revolutionary army together and run a totalitarian government based around stifling the dissent of anyone who realizes that this isn't real communism, it's just a modern monarchy with the Party instead of the royal family.
