60 days of water is a lot of water. I'm not going to say you shouldn't do that, but for most people it's more practical to start with a water filter so that they can use whatever kind of water they can find when they need it.

The toilet tank probably has a couple of day's worth as long as you can figure out how to not need to flush your shit down. Keeping the bathub full is pretty standard pre-storm protocol. But in both cases you're probably going to want to filter that before drinking it.

And once you have a filter you don't have to worry if you put too much or too little bleach in your storage tanks, or whatever you did in the hopes that it wouldn't spoil.

On water purification:
many preppers think bleach lasts forever, it doesn't, it starts breaking down after 6 months and gradually turns to salty water. If you want to stash some water purification chem, get some calcium hipoclorite (grain or powder) and learn the ratio of dilution to make it into bleach that you'll use on the water for purification. There was this one blog a former military guy was keeping while maintaining some sort of high rise building that happened to be equipped with a generator. Disinfectants and cleaning supplies because critically valuable after the city flooded out.

And what a lot of people don't about cities is that usually the sewage plants need electricity to run the pumps and are not equipped with generators. So even though the water plants and the cell phone towers and the hospitals and things have generators, in many cases the city will be forced to turn off the city water after a few days so that sewers don't back up.

5-gallon bucket, plastic bag liner, and something that absorbs moisture (cat litter or sawdust works well).
NEVER piss in this toilet—liquid helps shit to decompose, and is what causes latrines to reek.
Take a dump, and then cover it. You can pull the seat off your real toilet and set it on top of the bucket for more comfort.
Keep the bucket covered when not in use, or else flies will lay eggs and the maggots will eat your shit and create moisture that will cause the whole thing to stink.
It’ll take about 2 weeks to fill, for one person.
When about 80% full, pull the bag out and tie it off leaving as little air as possible inside, then stash the bag somewhere it won’t be accidentally torn open. Put it inside a second bag, if you have enough to spare.

For zip ties, get a spool that you can cut to size--handy in many normal situations as well; I always keep one in my camping gear and one in my electrical tool bag--$3.

We're talking prepping strategies. Most people on here probably don't excercise much either, but it was suggested earlier in this thread.

What if your gun breaks and you cant replace a part? You can make an improvised bow and arrow at anytime from a wide variety of materials. Arrow heads can be made from flint knapping, a survival skill you should have regardless.

You can turn the string into a bowstring for a fire, or use it to snare animals in the wild while you sleep.

Bows are the gift that keeps on giving.

Cool thread. I'm a prepper in Wisconsin. Actually moving out of the city in a couple months to a nice country plot.

As it stands right now I've got enough food to feed my family of 4 for ~3 months. I want to up that to at least a year. I've got enough water filtration gear for up to 12,000 gallons, all kinds of seeds, hygiene products, emergency lighting, etc. And of course guns & ammo.

My 2 main concerns right now are:

1) Upping my food supply
2) An emergency heat source. It gets cold here. The house I'm living in has a natural fire place so I was never overly concerned about it. The house I'm moving to does not.

Many will die and populations will displace themselves out of the city naturally, but many will stay making scavenging hard. Animals like squirrels and crows and such would be scared off from people, or even hunted in numbers so they would be scarce already. I'm not rich enough to have a prepper bugout shelter ready to go, so instead I keep a camp shell for my truck and enough supplies in my garage to load up and just drive into the woods and live out there for at least 4 or 5 months, and that's without any hunting or fishing, both of which I would be doing a lot of.

I can only speak for myself as I am from Canada, but not being able to hunt or fish up here during the winter is a death sentence. There are not many foragables here during certain parts of the year, and foraging is unreliable calorie wise. If they are near you or you haven't eaten in a long while go for it, otherwise stick to hunting and fishing.

Learning to take an animals life so you can live is pretty gruesome, and so is field dressing it, but its a necessary skill to have if you want to survive in the wild. Fish aren't so bad but when you kill a fresh deer and you are pulling out its warm moist guts out of its torso...

Of course, if you are stuck in the city you may never have these options.

Get a hunting dog. Another mouth to feed but a valuable one at that, also dried dog food is cheap as fuck and is safe for human consumption if you got nothing else. Guns, guns, guns. A gun should not be your first choice for a true SHTF scenario. Of course it is great to have but ammo is heavy, limited, you have to keep it dry and it's loud as fuck, and if you can't stay in one place that's going to be a problem. A good compound bow is what you want as your default weapon. You want a great pair of boots, maps, binoculars, compass and general outdoor wear, a machete and or hatchet, fishing rod, tackle, plenty of bait, a good buck knife, a single person tent, sleeping bag, salt, pepper, lard and a big bag of oats, one small pot, a skillet, plenty of socks and underwear, a flint lighter and a few other odds and ends. A short wave radio receiver and or a two way radio you can charge in the sun is a good investment too.
