At least the hospital gave the guy a fortnight to pay.

Usually insurance pays for most of the cost, but seeing as how the guy stayed in the hospital for 14 days, the cost should be relatively, albeit not that high.
>>
>>134816228
Pretty much this.
The hospitals started offering more and more specialty treatments, so insurers started requiring more paperwork from hospitals. This causes hospitals to hire more admin staff and they have to raise prices to account for these extra costs.
The insurers started requiring more paperwork as the costs went up.
Hospitals had to hire more admin staff and raise prices as the paperwork went up.
This cycles will continue until we fix the system.
A study of identical procedures in two hospitals located in similar areas, but one in US, one in Canada, showed that 40% of the price increase on the American side was directly because of administrative costs.
>>

Radiology covers all imaging using radiation. Probably gave the guy a CT scan to see how bad the hemorrhaging was, not really necessary but a nice additional thing to charge someone with.

But I thought Obama fixed healthcare? I thought now everyone could easily afford insurance that was good and covered everything? I thought it was all perfect now...? Did Obama lie to us??
>>
>>134816228
No actually it is the cost of government inserting itself into the private sector. You do know the the whole mass insurance benefit in the work place was because of FDRs wage cap. In order for companies to attract the skilled workers they needed they had to offer something. Then later the government added Medicare, and dictated prices they would pay, so then the providers had to raise the prices to get their money back, and that is why we have this mess. Again thank you Demon rats.

I am still amazed at how few people know about how the U.S. healthcare system works, but are so quick to criticize it. I've worked in healthcare for a long time though so I guess it's just a no brainer for me. Here's some key financial points for anyone who is actually interested in talking about the U.S. healthcare system:

- Every price can be haggled. What do you think the insurance companies do when the hospital contacts them? The whole reason why bills are so high is because they haggle for pennies every single time they are billed.

- You can never be turned down for any medical procedure. Can't pay? Fucking tell the nurses and doctor that and nine times out of then they will outright waive your fees on the downlow. This is so common we actually overprescribe certain meds so we can have nurses "accidentally" leave them in the room with a patient on their way out.

- Got stuck with a huge bill and it went into collections? Give them $20 and a note saying that's all you can pay. Might take a couple times but eventually they will drop all debt against you
>>
>>134815887

He'll never have to pay that much.

1. Hospitals overcharge because of the number of non-payments, so it's a way for them to recoup money.
2. Rich people donate to hospitals every year to pay off people's bills. You know why? Tax deductions. This would be a bill ripe for such a contribution.

Either way, he'll never have to pay that amount. They know it's bullshit. If I had to guess, it was probably some rare kind of snake with a venom that had to be flown in.

My uncle got bit by a rattlesnake about a decade ago and his total bill was in the ~30k's range. Those viles are like 2k a pop and he went through about 20 or so. His insurance covered it all, but they told him to cool it on the injuries because he has a yearly limit of like 100k or something.
>>
>>134815887
He didn't have insurance and he put off going to the hospital until he was almost dead (they had to pump him with 43 doses of an obscure form of antivenom. The antivenom costs the hospital 2,500 - 3,000 dollars per dose so obviously the patient is going to pay more, especially when he's uninsured.

No.

Medical condition and ability to pay for any treatment that may be required are examined at the border and grounds to refuse entry. We turn burgers with medical issues back at the border every day because they have a serious medical condition and no meaningful way to pay for treatment if anything were to happen while they're here (not enough private funds or insurance coverage). Even if you receive treatment while you're here, you'd also get a bill (that follows you home).

Canadian health coverage is only for Canadian citizens and permanent residents who reside here more than half the year.

>Boesen said he knew of one snake bite victim in Arizona who required 74 vials of antivenom. The wholesale rate that hospitals pay to the manufacturer is $2,500 per vial and the markup to patients and insurance is much higher.

>Fassler's bill included a line item of $83,341.25 for "pharmacy" to cover the antivenom, as reporter Dan Haggerty of KGTV in San Diego posted on Twitter. According to the original report, Fassler used up the antivenom supply from two hospitals.

To all of the Euros claiming that he should have went to X country to receive treatment--he'd have died. If he had just went when he was first bitten instead of waiting until he was on death's door, he'd have paid much less even though he would have still been uninsured.

Aren't you forgetting to add the cost of your lost wages for the few days in hospital, and possibly the lose of your job entirely thanks to 'at will employment'. In all seriousness though, your healthcare system if great if you have a decent job (the kind the gives you emergency leave) with good insurance. It sucks for 'have nots' in literally the same situation. Whether the above is 'fair' depends on how much responsibility the affected party bears in the situation; from fucking with a rattler, to complete accident or a malicious tort from a judgment proof other party.

My ER visit upfront costs 100$ no matter what is done, after that I have a 3k/6k deductible (I am young, forgot which it is) of which I have to pay everything before insurance picks up 50/50. After I pay 2x my deductible the insurance picks up everything for the rest of the year.

Insurance is a scam. It's great that they negotiate visit fees and my medicine, but the actual costs of treatments are outrageous.

That might work if you actually are unemployed and own nothing. But, if you own a car, or a house, or have a job, they will take your property and garnish your wages. They can not just "write it off" until the have squeezed you for everything you've got and ruined your credit for the rest of your life. We average about 15 rattle snake bites a year in my province, but nobody's died from a snake bite here in the last 40 years.

Did you even read my post?

We've been experiencing a brain drain since the 60s. You guys pay better (often more dollars, of a higher value, with more buying power, and fewer taxes).

>>134820954
do you realize how much money is thrown at cancer research each year? yet we get almost nothing in return. Although it really pains me to say it, as my family has been afflicted by cancer multiple times, a good deal of that money should be diverted to infrastructure or engineering research.

They keep throwing money at the medical field thinking it will help cure cancer, but the thing they don't realize is that medicine always lags behind technology and if they really wanted to cure cancer, they would put more money into the non biological sciences. Once more usefull technologies are discovered, they could spill over and help with cancer research.
For example, if the feds and (((charities))) spent half the money they do currently on cancer and used it with nanotech, we could have nanobots eliminate the cancer on their own.

Also this cancer "cure" is a meme. You have to kill cancer, you can't cure it. You can stop its spread but that is not curing. Nanobots could solve this entire mess but we have to keep throwing money at the bio retards

Every full-time job that isn't McDonalds provides (optional) insurance you can choose to opt out of. Here in the land of the free, you can choose to do that if you want 20 more dollars a month on your payroll check. If he was poor or unemployed, he'd have qualified for Medicaid (free government insurance). It's always funny when Eurotards speak about a country that they don't even understand outside of Michael Moore movies.

Actual question ameribros.

Say I get hurt badly, transferred in an emergency room and get treatment, surgeons save my life and all that jazz. The hospital then proceeds in giving me the bill.

Say I'm not insured, and that I don't pay the bill. What the fuck happens to me?
>>
Part of the cost, most of it actually, with anti-venom has to do with shelf life. Anti-venom doesn't last forever, and most is thrown away, as it goes bad before it can save a life.

So, if you need anti-venom, you're paying for program cost, not just the doses you needed.

Ideally, we would just abandon treating venomous snake bites. The cost is exorbitant, and it affects basically no one (google says 7-8k people a year). If this was a rare disease, no one would bother researching treatment, let alone nearly a 100% successful cure.

Eliminate venomous snake bite treatment, save the hospital money, no more crying social media posts about snake bite anti-venom costs. That said, if most people saw a loved one quickly succumbing to a venomous snake bite, the would jump at the opportunity to pay $150k to save their life. All about perspective.

Nothing, you just raise costs for everyone else.

You have to be rather careless to get bitten by a Rattle snake.

I lived on the far spot in this pic where we were inundated by rattlers. St patrick would have a field day yet only once was anyone bit and that was a child who was being a child.

I personally used to lasso them and drop them in a fifty-five gallon barrel we had till there were a few DOZEN then trundle them across the Merced River and roll out the barrel...

>>
>>134825662

It's amazing how many times I've seen the snake bite hospital bill used as an example for how bad out health care is, when it actually makes logical sense.

Antivenom is made from injecting venom in horses and then siphoned from their blood. On top of that snake venom is like the most expense thing by volume on the planet. Look it up it's insane. Like 1/4 teaspoon is 10k. Gold smold. Diamonds? Nope. Snake venom.

It also then has a shelf life of 2 weeks, meaning it spoils like a $500k gallon of milk no one is drinking.

On top of that, people act like socialized medicine wouldn't have these costs. Yes they do.
