I am still amazed at how few people know about how the U.S. healthcare system works, but are so quick to criticize it. I've worked in healthcare for a long time though so I guess it's just a no brainer for me. Here's some key financial points for anyone who is actually interested in talking about the U.S. healthcare system:

- Every price can be haggled. What do you think the insurance companies do when the hospital contacts them? The whole reason why bills are so high is because they haggle for pennies every single time they are billed.

- You can never be turned down for any medical procedure. Can't pay? Fucking tell the nurses and doctor that and nine times out of then they will outright waive your fees on the downlow. This is so common we actually overprescribe certain meds so we can have nurses "accidentally" leave them in the room with a patient on their way out.

- Got stuck with a huge bill and it went into collections? Give them $20 and a note saying that's all you can pay. Might take a couple times but eventually they will drop all debt against you

Say I get hurt badly, transferred in an emergency room and get treatment, surgeons save my life and all that jazz. The hospital then proceeds in giving me the bill.

Say I'm not insured, and that I don't pay the bill. What the fuck happens to me?

Part of the cost, most of it actually, with anti-venom has to do with shelf life. Anti-venom doesn't last forever, and most is thrown away, as it goes bad before it can save a life.


So, if you need anti-venom, you're paying for program cost, not just the doses you needed.

Ideally, we would just abandon treating venomous snake bites. The cost is exorbitant, and it affects basically no one (google says 7-8k people a year). If this was a rare disease, no one would bother researching treatment, let alone nearly a 100% successful cure.

Eliminate venomous snake bite treatment, save the hospital money, no more crying social media posts about snake bite anti-venom costs. That said, if most people saw a loved one quickly succumbing to a venomous snake bite, the would jump at the opportunity to pay $150k to save their life. All about perspective.

Antivenom is made from injecting venom in horses and then siphoned from their blood. On top of that snake venom is like the most expense thing by volume on the planet. Look it up it's insane. Like 1/4 teaspoon is 10k. Gold smold. Diamonds? Nope. Snake venom.

It also then has a shelf life of 2 weeks, meaning it spoils like a $500k gallon of milk no one is drinking.
