In the UK, razors are actually taxed, but I'm not sure how the laws vary across the US.

Also there's a good reason tampons are (still) taxed:
1) At the time of their invention, disposable sanitary products were a luxury, normal women would just bung it up with old rags.
2) After many many years, disposable sanitary products slowly became the norm.
3) Now all women are using disposable tampons and too much tax money is being raised from tampon sales. The government doesn't want to cut its funding.

I think it's to do with the fact that razors are tax free whereas tampons are not. The idea being that being clean shaven was a mandatory requirement for many jobs whereas tampons are, by those outdated standards, a convenience. Tax both or tax neither, I don't actually have a problem with it.
