When I travelled across the United States, I put on a lot of weight and I think this is fairly common.
The problem isn't just that every affordable food item has been deep fried, the other problem is everything has way too much sugar or High Fructose Corn Syrup in it.
I was there in my early 20s and am somewhat thankful that my youthful metabolism was able to overcome their lethal culinary options.

If you were eating out every night, then I'd blame a lot of that on portion sizes. The plates we get are absolutely massive. When I go out to eat, I can usually save half the plate and eat it for lunch the next day.
