Military anons of /pol/, what did you learn in the military that civilians should know? Should we know how to make defensible positions? know how much supplies to carry on our person in case of emergency? Should we know basic self-defense? should we know foreign policy well? what should we know?

For the most part soldiers aren't gonna be that great at survival tactics. With the obvious exception in regards to SF or pilots that do the higher level SERE training. The truth of the matter is that logistics wins wars. We have the best logistical chains of any nation. We will rarely lack for food. Our doctrine for warfare assumes we've gained air superiority. Our doctrine calls for number superiority for engaging in a firefight. There's no emphasis on hunting for food or making your own shelter for example. My personal advice is that fortune favors the well prepared. Water is more important than food and its the heaviest thing you'd have to carry in a pack because of its density.

Another good thing to learn is that you likely could find a solution to your problem on your own if you put some effort into it. If you have tried nothing and are asking for help you should expect to bumbled around for a while longer till I help.

>For the most part soldiers aren't gonna be that great at survival tactics
That's suspect. Not due to military training, but due to the fact that at least for combat arms lots of members have outside training and skill at survival.

I think the number of boy scouts in the military is higher than any other job you might find.

US Marine Infantry. 2 combat tours. 37 gunfights. 2 IED strikes to my vehicle. had a guntruck shot out from under me by an RPG.

>Gunfights suck. Avoid them.
>They take retarded amounts of cardio. No matter how well you are trained and how good of a marksman you are its friggin crazy hard to shoot a guy who is trying to shoot you. Even some dipshit 15 year old with a rusty AK only has to get lucky once to render all the training and equipment moot and kill you.
>explosions arent so cool when youre inside one. Braindamage is the normal outcome assuming amputation or death by dismemberment and shrapnel doesnt happen first.
>unit cohesion, rehersal, and communication are all more important than gear and guns. If you got 50 dudes with the best guns money can buy but no training on how to work tpgether they will get wiped out by 20 dudes with crappy gear but good training.

If a real war breaks out on merican soil yer all gonna die. Well.... most of you anyways. Everyone likes to imagine it as a heroic "everyone but me" deal but the reality is you dont even gotta fuck up or do anything wrong. You just gotta get unlucky once. Americans (and just peoole in developed nations in general) are NOT ready to do the dirty unheroic and downright reprehensible things you need to do to survive.

Even then, survivibg will leave you a bitter apathetic asshole with brain damage, shitty knees, fucked up back, torn rotator cuffs, and fucked up hips. Makes you an old man by age 25.

Patience. Tuned aggression. Competence. A personal set of ethics. Respect for those with experience. Desire for camaraderie. Appreciation of competition. Discipline of the mind and body. Evaluation of threats.

Learning to train, develop, and lead--and to trust subordinates and peers with delegated tasks. Understanding that family and country come before money, medals, and rank.

Finally: all that matters is your mission gets accomplished and your men come home to their families. Fuck everything and everyone else.

This is why militias in the US are so important.

Organization and communication and practice. These are what white people should be focusing on.

The trouble is that we're all enormously disconnected from each other in real life and we have no way to network and intermingle. What things like churches and holidays used to do for us, no longer do. Families grow more distant by the decade from each other.

We really need to start tightly knitting white communities back together somehow.

Former Navyfag here. NOS B320.

The US has a lot, I mean...A LOT of foreign territories, bases, air fields and installations across the planet.

I was stationed in Hawaii, Japan and Guam for most of my active duty.

The one time I saw war, our objective was to smash and go. Rules of engagement were: open to interpretation and discretion. Floated into GOB (gulf of Bahrain) and unloaded 11,000 Tomahawks and 50 Scuds into Iraq. Targets being schools, hospitals, university dorms and military installations. Lots of innocent people died. We weren't the only country there doing this.

I'm personally responsible for tens of thousands of deaths, I sleep well at night.

>>
>>134591506
Yeah. Kinda bothers me a bit. When I DO tell my stories folks who aint been there jump down your throat for your story not matching their preconcieved notions of war.

Unless ypur story sounds like a rendition of american sniper or call of duty they dont wanna hear it. War is stupid. It wastes billions and billions on equipment that never gets used. It skims the best most virile, intelligent, fit, and motivated individuals and grinds em up. Either kills em or burns them out and evicts them from societey. Its clumsy, dirty, dangerous and honestly not even very interesting to watch.

A real gunfight is a stumbling clumsy ducking affair that lasts 6 hours and if you move too slow, stick your head out too far, or just fuckin enter the wrong room too early or too late you get pasted.

You might even do everything right and still lose your legs just because an IED or landmine wasnt picked up by the sweeper. Maybe a grenade gets tossed through a window in the middle of your tacticool house clearing op. Maybe some shithead with a sniper rifle puts one in your head while youre trying to take a piss or eat something. Its random and stupid and senseless.

Movies and games have everyone convinced that combat is exciting and visually appealling. Its not. Its just fuckin stupid and terrifying and when its over you just wanna go home, but you still got 5 months left.

You just wanna eat something but it smells like literal shit cuz some haji got hit by a mortar outside. People have shit inside them, when they explode or get shot where does it go? Fuckin everywhere.

>>
>>134587680
in case of civil war, mandatory areas for setting up camps would be in hard to cross terrain, swamps, woods, anywhere that government surveillance dims in capability. you can also have the benefit of having support from civilians. in many cases fighting federal forces head on will be a death send, you will have to ambush small units, destroy their weakest links.
>>
>>134593138
Knowing radio communication, 9line medevac, salute report, call for fire etc, also knowing how to read maps will be the best thing a civilian could learn in their free time. It will either save your life or help you get promoted if you get drafted or decide to join up.

>>134589779
Literally don't listen to this guy. That's advice that will get you killed. Stuff that shit with gauze and slap an H-bandage on it. If it's still bleeding, use a tourniquet. If we're talking shit hits the fan scenario, you don't want to use a tourniquet unless it's an arterial bleed with blood shooting out, because you will almost certainly lose that leg. Once it's on, it doesn't come off. Taking it off will resume bleeding with the added bonus of the clot possibly getting into your bloodstream and giving you a stroke if by some miracle you don't bleed out.

Dirt won't stop shit and you'll just get an infection that will kill you.

just conscription, not actual combat.

only thing of real-life value i learned from the experience was that the mind goes before the body. during heavy physical exertion, you can always do more, always push on. it has helped me in civilian life, both with exercise, and daily life in general. also with stress.

Voluntary Territory Army training is better, you don't want people who are unequipped and not interested in it.
When it is voluntary you'll get people who are interested and motivated to do the training.
Quality over quantity.

My country used to have it until not too long ago, it's good for numbers only. You end up getting kids with bad habits that end up corrupting others, thugs. It basically becomes a quantity over quality situation.

My opinion is that this kind of education should start early with some youth program like the Hitler's Youth or Salazar's Mocidade Portuguesa.
You can call it brainwashing or whatever you like, but it's certainly better than what we have these days.

>>134594629
Pretty accurate but I'll chime in. Having patrolled miles and miles in 160 pounds of gear I feel like im a bit of a subject matter expert on weight load.

Carry 1/3rd your body weight. Its enough weight to allow the essentials but not so much it decreases mobility. Yeah in COMBAT you need a lot of stuff when you dont know how long it will take and are expected to not only not avoid combat but actually intentionally engage in it.

Survival aint combat. If youre surviving you should focus on avoiding direct confrontation and staying mobile. Carry some food, some shelter (tarp and chordage and blanket) good knife, good hatchet, fire starting kit, some water, first aid, and some ammo. If you still got room left at the 1/3rd bodyweight mark toss in extras. Best survival pack isnt one that has everything, its the one thats flexible enough to respond to a wide varietey of situations but still light enough to actually be mobile in.

Ideally you should be able to cover atleast 20 miles a day with your pack. Walk 5 miles, rest 30 min, walk 5 miles, rest 30 min etc etc. If you arent fit then get fit. Cuz having a perfect pack dont mean shit if you cant move.

Don't get into running shape and assume you can hump around with a ruck.

Your legs need to be conditioned for weight. Do squats. Lots of squats. You should be able to squat 1.5x your body weight as skinny-fat nerd fresh off the couch. Work until you're over 2.0x.

In addition, start doing sprints. You're not running the god damn 400m. Do 50m at a time. Sprint 50m, walk 50m, sprint, walk, etc. This will increase your endurance better than doing long runs. General weight lifting will also increase your cardio condition. My fastest 5km runs have been when I was lifting a lot and RARELY doing distance running.

Once your sprints are up there, your legs are strong, and you could actually RUN for 3 miles (run, not jog - which is basically the same speed as walking), maybe start adding weights for your sprints.

I've always liked to sprint with a plate carrier and plates. It is absolutely not designed for this kind of stuff - the make purpose built weighted vests - but I like to be use to wearing it, even when it's uncomfortable and cumbersome.

IF you make it to where you can sprint for 200m with a weighted vest (plate carrier), maybe try it with a ruck. I never do.

Squats and sprints, though. Do them.

DISCLAIMER: Shin splints and plantar fasciitis are not fun. Take care of yourself. Don't start too fast. Getting in shape is not a "hit the ground running" evolution. You need to get into "usable shape" first. This will take time as your body adapts to not sitting on it's ass all day. Take it slow. I fucked my knee up pretty bad, but I kept lifting and I knew my cardio was there. I figured once I was rehabed, I would just continue running like a do anyway. Wrong. Plantar Fasciitis fucked my shit up. 4 months and 3 steroid shots later, I'm getting better.

Just take it slow, bubba.

I would be intrested in how much you really have to carry. I was told here in Germany it is maybe 35 kg. To me it seems odd that they complain about having to walk 20-25 miles in one day. I did tours with where i walked up to 30 hours with roughly equal weight. It was hard but nowhere near impossible to do, especially with good shoes and somebody you could talk to.

CBRN (74D) here. You can make a gas mask out of a wet t-shirt and a two liter and will work pretty well if you can't get a real one. A hazmat suit you can make out of a roll of duct tape and some waterproof tarps.

These combined will be good against most things except for gamma. Gamma radiation, you can find a two year fallout shelter or kiss your ads goodbye.

3/5 powdered bleach and dirt will be good for residual rads for cars. Activated charcoal is best but bleach will do the trick.

Don't join the army if you don't like racial politics. Mexicans and niggers (mostly nogs) blow each other for promotions and if you're white, pray to god you are in a white unit.

The best way to get in shape for hiking is fuckin easy dude. Just fill a pack full of shit and hike. Do it regularly and you'll figure out on your own what gear is a waste of space and whats critical. After a while you just dont notice the weight anymore and can cover miles and miles without having to slow down or stop.

I mean this gym stuff is fine but frankly just filling up a pack with gear and hiking will do the job just fine.

Most folks dont like hearing that they aint ready for combat. Everyone secretley imagines themself as the main charecter at the center of the story.

Reality is combat sucks and most people arent capable of it without the proper indoctrination and conditioning. Even then its a fuckin asskicker that burns you up pretty quick.

Maybe like 5% of the population end up with the right combination of mental and physical traits that make them naturally fit for warfare. The rest gotta be indoctrinated and PTed and drilled over and over for months at great expense to be worth a damn at fighting. Plus you lose that skillset and mindset really fast. It only takes a few months to revert back to being useless again. Thats why military grunts are literally almost never not training at it.

Its a pretty sick lifestyle too. Wears ya out fast and is generally just an unsustainable mode of existence.

You should know you have little to no chance of long term survival without a colony in which to live in.
Can someone survive on their own? Yes.
Will you be that person, statistically impossible.
You can study as many books, you can try to practice as much as you want to survive.
You will not without a reliable home and family (colony) to work with.
You'll starve, get sick, lose resources, die from environmental factors, be ransacked, be murdered, be taken over, be injured, because this is not a movie. You can not do it all.
If you want to learn useful skills, sure go for it. Specialize in something. The more specialized you are the more you can barter and be useful with other people (could potentially save your life if someone say needs a mechanic).
The colony is the only way to survive.
You work together for each other's mutual survival. It's the only form of communism that actually works. As every human needs resources to live.
As for supplies, you carry at most a quarter of your body weight. You'll never be able to carry more indefinitely. Though it could be argued you could carry more at the start and drop unneeded weight as you move on. You carry as much of that in food and water as you can.
You keep your regions temperature in mind and the rest of your resources should reflect the environment.
This isn't some fucking camp out, this is survival. You'll possibly be sleeping in drain ditches, you could be sleeping in shacks.
Maybe abandoned houses, but in reality until you know the nature of your threat. Assume you'll be sleeping with no fire and no protection from the elements.
Basic defense is just a plus, a firearm or improvised weapon is just plain better. Not getting into a CQC fight or taken prisoner is the smarter move.
Foreign policy? If shit hits the fan to the point we are living Red Dawn, this won't matter at all. They will kill you if given the chance.
5 years SOCCNET, multiple years PSYOP, trained with SF, I am not SF.

No that's a meme m8.
If you were infantry it's like a frat house, it's really easy to start rumors.
PSYOP isn't even called that anymore.
It's called MISO now, because the government thought PSYOP sounded too scary.
I have 6 coins from the unit, one of those coins is literally from the last batch of PSYOP coins to ever be made.

If you have questions feel free to ask.
Flat out though, PSYOP is the weirdest mix of POG and Operators that exist in the military.
I worked alongside SF, Infantry, computer guys, "psyopers", it was just a weird fucking experience.

SOCCENT was pretty awesome, I worked with the marines the entire time in IRAQ.

Back to basics, they don't need Rambo. They need a dude who has skills of any kind.

Tourniquet should only be used for high pressure bleeding. Like squirting out every beat. Anything else you will want to just gauze and bandage. Eventually it will clot if minor. Never lift the gauze, only ever put more gauze on. Wrap from the thinnest to the thickest. This all assumes the person is in a safe area. Always treat the least hurt first. Tourniquet wounds that need them first, then treat minor wounds to increasing severity. If someone's leg is blown off and you don't have immediate help it's a goner.

I have a good one anon. Water is the biggest problem. you can fanny about, or if you just want to live then make sure you always have a few bottles of household bleach kicking about.
You can take puddle water, put a couple of drops in a two gallon jug and shake it and leave it for half hour or so, and the water will be purified. It'll taste rank, but it will be pathogen free. Avbottle of bleach isnt that hard to carry and could keep you in water for months.

rest of the group
>k
We would be gone for hours.

Yeah people who work out of Qatar (the JISTF) are the ones who make the flyers.

As far as the memes that's really only because to be a PSYOPer you have to no one foreign language. So we shit talk a lot with the foreigners.
The Marine thing probably came from someone pointing at them and saying "You see those guys, don't fuck with those guys. They will destroy you." and the urban legend evolves from there.

It's the whole point of PSYOP originally. That whole hearts and minds shit only really started recently. Back in the 60s-2000s PSYOP often use to mind fuck people.
Give a little bit of information to locals like hey this badass group will be at x location and you need to stay out of the way. All the terrorist show up and then helicopters come in and blast everyone away.

Just a chess game really.
However now that it's MISO, it really is just flyers that say gay memos.

Still there are some badass people depending which battalion you are in.

1. the first thing they teach you in boot camp is to pay attention to detail

2. the second thing is accepting responsibility, particularly if you are slow to to catch onto # 1

3. is accountability, once you understand # 1 and # 2, you'll learn to hold yourself accountable, and others accountable with an eye for fairness

then you can be a part of a team (which is what the service is all about )

I came to the quick realisation that I'm not the main character in some, rich, over-arching story, instead I'm a small useful piece of a larger entity, made up of other smaller and hopefully useful pieces. yup

and if shtf it's going to be martial law nationwide indefinitely. maybe a day or two of riots depending on the spark that sets it off, but more likely people just hunker down and wait for the food trucks to arrive before all out ww3

it's good to be able to survive on one's own, and having a food/water supply is a great idea considering how dependent we all are on supply chains, but it's not a long term solution

survival in ww3 means finding a very deep bunker and hoping the russians can't get to it

aim high; related?

Sorry, Ramadi was in 15. Was an "advisor" to the iraqi army as they were assaulting ISIS there. Really just ended up doing tons of overwatch for the SEALs while they raided stuff and did BDAs on strikes. Was with 7th marines technically, but my squad was detached and loaned to the SEALs as a security, QRF, and Overwatch detail the entire time.

Ramadi wasnt as bad as sangin. Fuck sangin. I was so glad when I heard nolegs had been retrograded. Accidentally wrote my career backwards. Did my first pump to sangin, got fucked up, got sent to TTECG for a while. Got mostly better. Begged my way back into my old unit just in time to extend for a year and catch a pump to iraq to deal with ISIS where we ended up as tag-alongs for the SEALs.

Cuz it will stop working if people who were read in on the project blab about it. Most of the "secret" shit is pretty banal tho.

"Hey if you see this box with dohhickeys stickin outta it dont touch it. You will now sign a non-disclosure agreement and promise not to tell people you know about the secret box unless theyre gonna try to touch it."

It performs some stupid function like stealing cellphone data for intel purposes or records footsteps with seismographic data to figure out how many people move through the area etc etc.

They give you a series of challenge and pass phrases to determine if the person youre talking to is allowed to know about the secret box or not. If they cant return the responses in the proper order they dont need to know about the secret box and you havent given away anything except that theres something they dont need to know.

Occaisionally they need people to do menial chores for their secret sneaky bullshit and tell you just enough to do what they need you to. Grunts get around to all the fucky shitholes nobody else goes to regularly so they sometimes recruited us NCOs to do shit for em while we were out there.

The biggest take-away from the Army... 7 years in intel guy who went ranger with 4 combat missions.

Women are whores and Jodie will always be there to fuck your woman when you're not. Even if Jodie doesnt get them your cunt wife will get drunk lonely and cheat 10000%. Every single one. single is better for the warrior. Fuck prostitutes when you can but wrap it up.

Iraq and Afghanistan show how a future civil war would be unwinnable. Guerilla and insurgent tactics / attacks coupled with IED knowledge makes you a huge threat with limited resources. Cant kill an enemy you cant identify.

Your DD-214 is gold

Trust no one except people you've almost died with or you know are willing to die next to you

Intelligence and accurate information drives missions. This is key because bad information will get you killed

Civilian gear is usually better than milspec bullshit. Had a pair of merrel shoes last through 3 deployments. Rocky terrain and multiple missions a day. Something underrated and valuable that you can buy now is a drone. It can go where you cannot.

Buy multiple firearms and train with them all to see what you like best and do the best with. They are tools and serve a specific function so every one is used with different intentions in mind. If you buy an AR-15, gas impingement is bullshit and you'll clean your rifle everytime you shoot it. go piston.

Operate when weather is shit no one expects it and likewise expect the worst of shit to happen when the weather is nice.

Dont forget your PT belt faggots.

The milspec shit. Oh my god. People dont realise military gear is made by the lowest bidder. Mil-spec doesnt mean tough and effective. It means cheap, too heavy, and always broken.

Private sector is def the way to go.

Also intel drives ops, not ops driving intel. It really really fuckin sucks when instead of interpreting the intel and making decisions the brass start only listening to the intel that agrees with their wishful thinking and making you do stupid wild goose chases to try to prove themselves right.

Also the difference between info and intel. Info is "theres taliban somewhere over there. They got guns. Theyre selling heroin."

Intel is "theres between 25 to 35 taliban at this specific location. They have AK-47's and PKMs and atleast 1 RPG. They are selling heroin to finance smuggling operations, which is stored in this specific building and this guy (photo, name, aliases, identifying features, and usual locations) is the one in charge of it."

Info is unvetted, vagur and unanalysed. Intel is specific, vetted, and useful for a specific application. If you cannot craft a detailed plan with it its not intel. If you cannot verify its accuracy its bad intel.

A good sturdy pack. If it has molle straps you'll get additional functionality. A hand pump filter, good quality, sturdy and of high quality. Comms means (even a simple walkie talkie can be useful). Powerful flashlight with lots of spare batteries. Redundancies for everything. A good tarp with bungie cords. zip ties. Cord. A good knife. Knife sharpener. Duct tape / 100mph tape. More of a bugout bag list, but longevity and redundancy are always things to think about, as well as how you're going to carry it all. Great question.

I guess the most valuable thing to teach civilians is how to live off the grid (middle of nowhere).
The reason why:
1. the US military will never waste a drone strike on a single person or family.
2. Get out of any major city, or at least have a plan to get out of that city at a moment's notice. Both the Marine Corps, and the Army like to park their howitzers a few miles outside of the city and artillery the fuck out of it before they drive through it.
3. Marines hate certain kind of terrain, like swamps. We fucking hate swamps, so your best bet is to hide in the Louisiana bayou. We also hate extreme cold weather, so Alaska might be an option for you.
The moral of the story is, if you are enough of a pain in the ass, we'll just ignore you.

Believe in what? Getting crippled, burnt, paralyzed for the rich elite while they destroy your society?

Getting shot by illiterate Pashtun highlander peasant goatfucker on basically what could be another planet while meanwhile other people have fun, love, party and fuck? Go back home only to meet with lack of understanding and loathing from the very same people whose interests I supposedly fought to protect?

People who go into miliary are either cynical opportunists, poor, dumb or brainwashed, there is no excuse, it's not my problem your lack mental capabilities to validate your existence with anything else. The only thing worth believing was always one's own personal interest, just as the rich do. That 90% of the time is spent waiting for something to do/waiting in line for something/waiting for COB formation so you can go home/waiting in line at the range/walking in a line with a heavy ruck sack on/waiting in line for chow.

>Also combat isn't like how you may think, usually your shooting as guys too far away for you at actully aim and hit. It's often several guy sitting behind a wall or defensed area taking pot shots at each other until one can suppress the other and move forward

Even 50metres is pretty hard to hit as well. No one ever says "I got him in my sights, I killed him"

It's always

>i think ones dead
>did you shoot him
>no i thought you did
>is he actually dead?
>idk shoot him again
>yeah hes dead
>did you grab the savoys and dip?
>no i left it in the truck
>did you cover the dip up? i dont want fly shit in it
>yeah i think so

Can verify this. Always got yelled at in Afghanistan on night patrols with 80-100% illum for not wearing NVGs. Shit was annoying, if you let your eyes adjust it's fine, plus the upside is that if someone is hiding off the road or in a random qalat, at least it'll come as a surprise Haha. I quite seriously stopped giving a fuck altogether on my second go round.

I met the man once. He was pretty cool. He doesnt like his nickname very much tho. Mad dog implies hes just a crazy lunatic. Hes way way more intelligent than that. The warrior monk is a lot more apt term for him. Hes spent his life studying, waging, and worshipping war. Guy single handedly re-shaped our military doctrine and the entire operational culture of the US Marine Corps.

>soldiers have always existed to protect the public
It's not my fault that your understanding of history goes back 100 years only and is limited to United States. I'll stand by my statement, I believe that only eligible uniformed service carrying weapons is elected local police (as in Anglo-Saxon sheriff model). Everything else is mercenaries enforcing the will of the rich and powerful by the barrel of a gun under social and ideological disguise of state uniform. Today they do it to others, tomorrow they may do it to you

True on that. Nobody is taking the Rockies either.

no, knights in the middle ages performed similar function, as well as Legions in Rome

war is part of human nature

> I believe that only eligible uniformed service carrying weapons is elected local police (as in Anglo-Saxon sheriff model).

the army is a lot older than the police, actually

it's not just mercenaries, it's also self-defense, existential struggle for power and territory (eg. crusades), etc.

Pic related is shit and even posting it reveals an unsat level of ignorance not only of firearms, but of metal.

Learn basic metalworking, mechanics, and at least basic vehicle electrical systems.

>Buckets of prop wash.

If your troop returns with a five gallon can of solvent, he's a bright lad. If he disappears for most of the shift then returns with said pail, he's a fine asset to your unit.
