Environmental Science here. My math requirement was on track with a B.Sc. in mathematics less 16 credits of additional math classes. I had to go through Calc 1-4, multivariable calc, linear algebra, Euclidean geometry, vector analysis and probabilities.

When I worked in Switzerland, I found that my Swiss coworkers across the board were more well rounded in maths. I found that they are grilled with math in high school, so when they enter college, they are already at a calc 1 to calc 2 level, where as in the US, faggots can barely work with fractions and square roots.

Math is used to filter otherwise qualified people out of popular classes. My entrance requirement math was vastly more complex than my actual course math, which was even more complex than the math I do in my job as a Power Engineer.

However, the girls at my school taking nursing had to do math that was a bit past the math I did when I was doing calculus for a different degree that I switched from. A nurse really doesn't need differential calculus for anything yet they all had to take and try to pass a calculus course. The reason is that they nursing school has 5 times as many applicants that met the requirements of a high school average of 85% or better. So they throw in a class that cuts the 'qualified' people to 1/4.

The humanities requirement forced on STEM is a cash grab by schools to force extra cheap to delivery credit hours on students.

I know this isn't what the news report is talking about, but it is just another fault with the education system.

It's not just humanities that are a cash grab. Every department does this because a major source of funding is payment from the university based on student-hours taught. The calculus sequence is a huge money maker for math departments in the same way as the basic composition courses fund the English departments. Huge lecture halls full of undergrads being taught by a TA make it possible to fund things like graduate seminars where there are only three students and one of the most experienced professors in the department is teaching them.

My 130cr undergrad (BS in Ecology) was maybe 50cr Biology, 20cr for my minor, which means that the other HALF of my education was in "Multicultural Requirements" or shit like that. I understand students need to be well rounded, so things like English and even Psych make sense, but things like Music? Poetry? I feel like I'd be just as good of a Biologist without those courses.

They are heavily subsidized colleges. That can be used as way to get the first two years of college done for cheap. They do not offer housing so you have to commute there to take courses. They are a great way to get your general education courses out of the way and to try different subjects with little financial cost. The associates degree is worthless but you could turn it into something.

Not an argument. Seriously though, police departments in this state can pay upwards of a 100k starting salary. How often do you think some beat cop is using advanced algebra? Same goes for people in communications or HR, or any number of other middle class careers. There are other jobs that need to be done in the world than those done by STEM majors.
