Literature does not equal writing instruction. Did I say STEM major shouldn't take a first year writing course or did I say they shouldn't take a literature course?

agreed coding is easy as fuck, and only getting easier. Hell, with Unity, you can make a 3d vr game withoug typing a single line of code. Just clicking and entering values in easy to understand forms, with a multitude of freely available tutorials,

coding degrees that require separate calculus (1+2) and physics (1+2) are completely pointless. Not to say you wont use calculus, but all the calculus principles you need for modern coding can be taught in one semester in a class called "math for computer science majors"

Math classes have the highest fail rate for a reason. its a scam and oversold. Student attrition in those highly repeated courses is a major profit center for universities.

I agree that most math classes are a scam, but that is only because they are too easy and cater to the lowest common denominator. The pass rate for most college math classes is significantly higher than it should be. Most math classes can be passed simply by memorizing formulas instead of understand concepts, its only when you move on to actually applying the concept you learned in math to physics do most students realize how little they actually understood and that they were only solving problems that were spoon fed to them.

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/african-americans-over-represented-among-low-paying-college-majors/

>African-Americans over-represented among low-paying college majors

>More African-Americans are going to college than ever before. But according to new research from the Center on Education and the Workforce at Georgetown University, African-American college students are more likely to pursue majors that lead to low-paying jobs, setting up many for future debt and underemployment.

>African-Americans make up only a small percentage of some of the highest-paying of majors, including those in STEM and business. They’re only 8 percent of engineering, 7 percent of mathematics and 5 percent of computer science majors. Worse, Carnevale said even those who do major in high-paying fields, typically choose the lowest paying major within them. For example, the majority of black women in STEM typically study biology, the lowest-paying of the science discipline. Among engineers, most black men study civil engineering, the lowest-paying in that sector.

>African-American college students tend to have majors in public service which are also some of the country’s lowest-paying. As this chart shows, African-Americans are over-represented in majors that are some of the lowest paying. Image from Center on Education and the Workforce

I sucked ass at Alegbra (freshman year in H.S.) and I've seen innumerable ways that it could be helpful. It's funny how half the people on /pol/ think education is useless and college is joke, and the other half act like if you're not an electrical engineer you're retarded. Make $85k/ year as a software engineer. I use algebra and discrete mathematics all the time in code. Also since when is school about teaching you what you need to know rather push the boundaries of your ability to learn new things? If high school and universities were about making you better at real life they would teach budgeting, financial strategies, smart shopping, taxes, and other shit everyone learns the hard way from being an adult. If "usefulness" is how we gauge what should stay in schools, why the fuck is no one bitching about the arts?

I run a small software business with 4 employees and I use trigonometry every week.

I hope I triggernomer'd you.

Everyone should get a cursory understanding of maths, accounting, grammar (honestly I think teaching 1 classical language is the best thing, I self taught a sufficient level of Russian and Japanese to get around, but I would never have been able to do it without Latin, I learnt almost nothing in 5 years of French at school), history (especially classical history, destruction of empires, south sea bubble, basic things about our rights like magna carta, reasons for modern world tensions), science, programming.

Just up until age 14 and then go wild specialising in 10 topics. Age 14 4 topics, age 18 university if you want to, or actually start encouraging vocational apprenticeships for kids who won't benefit from 30k of debt and a piece of paper from a non-red brick uni in a non-stem field.

The fact is, education isn't great and it never will be because it's on the state. Up until age 11 you're going to have one teacher who teaches all subjects and at the higher ages won't even care or have a proper understanding of some of the topics (especially programming and foreign languages). Numeric literacy is correlated with high pay more than any other skill, so of course it's taught as a general rule. If you want your kids to have a more bespoke education, homeschool them.

Lol, the most cost effective thing for the state to do is ram science, maths and economics down everyone's throats until they go and get well paid jobs instead of doing gender studies.

Again, if you want a bespoke education answering to your very specific sensibilities, either go get a private tutor, get homeschooled, or (what happens to most people), go specialise in your field in your actual degree. Storytime /pol/:
When I was a ChemE undergrad, in my junior year they shoe-horned about 30 of us into an Economics 101 class, so that we could fulfill some credit requirement. Now most of us had been on a pretty hard track course wise, and this class literally met after a 2 hour block on separation processes.
We were surrounded by absolute retards.
We get 4 weeks in, and the professor says, "Now in order to explain how the rates in supply and demand change, we need to get into a little bit of calculus". People around me are looking around, starting to freakout a bit.
All she needed them to do was to look at a curve and see when the slope was steep or flat. They couldn't do it.

Educations are more than just learning one skill, and business majors (of past decades at least) chronically lack the ability to even write a coherent email. Being able to write up a clear, concise summary of your work is pretty crucial and people learn these skills in literary classes. They don't have to be obscure literary classes, and depending on the school you might have the option to focus on professional linguistic skills.

Hi Friend! I come here because I'm smart and I'm convinced many of you are smart (I've seen the screen grabs from IQ test sites). I just want to mention that I have a double major in Applied Math and Computer Science, and while a LOT of coding is codemonkey string manipulation, most interview questions revolve around hash maps and heaps/priority queues, there are some very cool problems I just got my head around. One is collision detection. Yeah, Unity has that, but now I know why they have pill shapes and such. It's called GJK Intersection tests and it's not only in games, it keeps robots from colliding with each other and is a big part of autonomous vehicles. So shut the fuck up with your simple algebra talk, complex math is very useful, and doing it wrong can get ppl killed.

Also algebra is really Al Jebra, an arabic phrase. We should call it Amerimath just to push in Arabia's shit.

Okay I rarely fucking use this one to be fair
>Latin & Greek
Insanely fucking useful for learning grammar, self teaching languages, understanding etmology, and reading tattoos lol. Also, having a latin dictionary is good for naming shit.
>Economics
Extremely useful info for running a business. I did physics at uni but I watched harvard courses on economics later while programming.
>IT
This was taught badly when I was young because I grew up on computers and the teachers didn't, but programming lessons would've been appreciated.
>History
Extremely interesting for modern culture and politics, and just fun. Especially ancient history.
>Tech
I don't use this because I don't own most of the equipment we used but I appreciate I might use some of it for DIY stuff when I'm older.
>Physics/Chem/Bio
Did a degree in Physics, Chem basically covered all of thermo, I went into a tangential field but I use my physics still, very occasionally chem. Bio is useful for arguments sometimes. Physics as well comes with a lot of philosophy.
>Religion
If you have a better understanding of someone's religion than they do themselves you can easily shut them up when they try to impose dumb shit.
>English Lit & Lang
Arguably language is more important, but lit still gave a bit of culture. Lang is even useful in writing scientific papers.
>Geography
Probably the one I use least but I learnt occasionally useful things

Planning for a trip?

If your car gets 20mpg and you have to travel 1000 miles, and gas is $3.00 a gallon, and it takes 10 minutes to fill the car up, and your average speed is 70mph, and you leave at 10am, how long will it take you to make it to your destination, how much money and how many stops will you make for gas?

We use algebra everyday, you faggots just don't know what algebra is.

This happened the other day, teacher skipped a step in solving for y, which is a step that's been used in almost every chapter for the past 5 weeks and 2/3 of the class panicked. She was like you're supposed to know this by now. Last chapter was solving for y to get your slope and y-intercept to graph and the class was bewildered that I got a 100%, they were passing my test around and everything.

I've been out of school for 12 years so I placed a bit low on the placement test, the only people having trouble keeping up are black and this one bartender who is like 50.

Not even to point and laugh and say, "haha niggers," but it is pretty shocking.

Why are people taking algebra in college?

in the US is the “standard level math student” takes Algebra 1, in grade 9 (freshman year), Geometry, in 10th grade (sophomore year), and Algebra 2, in grade 11 (junior year). Some US schools use “integrated math” where geoetry is not a separate course, but is instead integrated across 3 years of math, in this way Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra2, become integrated math 1, Integrated math2, and Integrated math3.

The drawback to both of these schedules is that it means you only make it to Pre-Calculus by grade 12, (senior year). However many school districts will allow the “advanced math students” to take Algebra 1 in Junior high/Middle School, often as early as 7th grade. In this way high school students in grades 11 and 12 (juniors and seniors) can take Calculus in high school.

Although there has been a trend in many US school districts similar to what you describe. Where rather than skipping the entire coursework known as 7th and 8th grade math, advanced students do both 7th and 8th grade math in 7th grade and move into Algebra 1 in 8th grade, this allows students to get to Calculus in their 12 grade (senior year) without any doubling up on math classes.

3. Secondary school teachers who teach A Level maths generally either really love teaching and are willing to take the paycut for the experience of teaching, or they weren't that good at advanced degree level maths enough to go on to get a good job, but were good enough to complete a degree, and therefore are good enough to teach A Level.

Maybe if you learnt maths you would know what an average is. Just because the average salary for someone who has a maths degree is higher in general, doesn't mean every maths related job is highly paid, especially one paid by the state.

Imagine if they paid maths teachers more than french teachers. Just picture the amount of reeeeeee-ing that would come from the resultant paygap at a state level. They go "whoop, this is a teaching job, teaching jobs earn exactly $X per annum, welcome to state jobs". If they went and used their maths to get a petroleum engineering degree they would be paid significantly more. They did not make those life decisions. Makes no difference to the average.

I did Physics and Math in Australia, and one of the good thing about my uni in particular is that they have two cohorts of physics. One is called the "Advanced Physics" whereas the other "mainstream physics". It is a very good system because it actually separates people that are genuinely good and interested at physics away from just regular people that are just doing it because they have watched too much black science guy tyson. You'll need be in the top 10% in physics during highschool to be able to enroll into the advanced stream.

Moreover, the physics in the advanced stream is more derivation based whereas the regular stream is more chug and plug numbers into memorised equations.

The original article is 404, but now I'm raging because I found another source. Statistically how many of you follow links or just trust OP?
Well, source 2 made me rage:
https://edsource.org/2017/at-cal-state-algebra-is-a-civil-rights-issue/582950
> By the way, please expand this polynomial, then > solve for y:
> (a_1 x + b_1) (a_2 x + b_2) = y ^ 2
RAGE!!!!! OMFG they guy who wrote this is THIS DUMB!!!! You don't E-X-P-A-N-D to solve, you FACTOR. Fuck fuck fuck. y = the square root of the simplified, factored left. If he said solve for y=0 you can LEAVE OUT SQUARE ROOT! (because zero squared is zero, square root of zero is zero) and the answers are x=-b1/a1 and -b2/a2

DO NOT LISTED TO PEOPLE WHO TELL YOU EDUCATION IS NOT NEEDED. ENEMY ENEMY NIGGER NIGGER JEW

The other day my trainer told me if I paid for 4 sessions at once it would be cheaper then paying for 2 sessions at 2 different times because of how they charge for taxes.
>I knew this didn't make sense
Is there a transaction fee?
"Yes it's a per transaction fee but every time I try to explain it to someone they just get frustrated so I say it's a tax."
>these are the same tards that think they don't need math.

Did physics and applied math in college. Graduated and am now doing Data science/ software engineering for one of the most successful companies in the US (arguably world too) and I use math and concepts from my physics classes every day.

All math is useful and you apply it in so many ways whether Or not you realize it. There's a reason people call it the language of the universe.

>Moreover, the physics in the advanced stream is more derivation based

As a koan:
> You hear and you forget.
> You see and you remember.
> You do and you understand.

Derivation is understanding, and you never forget that, you can often reconstruct it.

That's why I love the circle. Sin, cosine, and pythagoras all work well together. To wit: sin **2 + cos ** 2 = r ** 2, and if r = 1, you get the famous sin * sin + cos * cos = 1
