Most people will eventually come to the realisation that more government is actually the problem and not the solution to our problems. Right now I think the majority of people are still naive to this but in the upcoming stage of the ongoing financial crisis it will become clear to all but the dumbest of dumb that it was governments which were the problem after all.

It's clearly unsafe as it is, but 65 000$ for a 10 steps stairs is a rape. And I say it as someone who lives in a country where the waste of public money is a sport.

Public works projects cost so much because they need a small army to

1) get it passed through the budget
2) make sure whatever they are building is up to code
3) make sure that it is handicap accessible
4) actually build the damn thing

The idea is to minimize lawsuits. Some old bitch is going to slip and fall and these stairs and sue the city for $10 million.

Blame lawyers and litigious culture
>>
>>134327121
Honestly he did a shitty job but I get the point. The government charges a lot of money because they buy material from expensive companies and hire workers that stand around for 5 hours. It's easier to contract these expensive fuckheads than to find someone else to do it cheaper, so the government just forks over as much money as the contractors demand. The US does the same thing.

Ask anyone with military experience about those 12,000 dollar steel wrenches? Could run to Lowes and get the same fucking wrench for 20 bucks but naw, let's just keep charging the American people that huge amount. It's fine. So much easier than shopping like a pleb lel ecks dee

>Is it actually possible to sue for literally everything?
Yep
>Is there no personal responsibility?
Nope

This nobody builds the city a free staircase. It's not up to "code". The wood isn't rated for outdoor weather. The wood hasn't been coated. The staircase hasn't been anchored to an appropriate depth. The handrail can cause splinters I'm not saying this is what is wrong with the staircase, just giving examples of what could be wrong.

So then somebody complains to the local government that this "dangerous" staircase exists, and the government does nothing about it. Somebody else comes along and is injured while using this staircase, and they argue that they were injured because the staircase wasn't up to code, then they argue that the city is liable because they did nothing about the faulty staircase after it was brought to the city's attention.

Jews, man.
>>

All governments are like this. Guy i know quoted for a government job doing some excavation work. He quoted 10k and they said it was too low and to win the job he would have to raise the price. The australian government has 'Q build' a government contracter that does all government building. They charge insain prices, most of the time double or more than the actual cost and the work is always sub par and needs constant maintenance work. Its why im so against socialism, without healthy competition everything becomes shit. See china.

If the government knows about unsafe conditions in a public park, and it knows people go there, then it becomes the govs responsibility to SHUT IT DOWN.

driving from the community where you live to the community to where you work serves to ensure that nobody actually has any genuine community

I'm glad someone is trying to make a point here, as $65,000 minimum is a disgusting estimate and waste of taxpayer money, but these steps are so fucking shitty and low-effort it almost makes me take the side of the state on this one.

The problem here is liability. Those stairs don't have a proper foundation. There are so many jackasses that will abuse this and sue the city for such stairs. This is why it costs $65,000.

And before anyone claims this is only an "American" thing, it happens also in Europe and Canada. The difference is, the US has more lawyers and made legal matters a huge business.

>upcoming financial crisis
I love how people continue to meme this. There will not be a financial crisis so bad that there are people going hungry or rioting in the streets. Not under the banking system and economic policy we have in place. If there is a collapse so bad that it makes people starve, it was planned as long as it happens under the current system. Sure, some people may lose their homes and investments, however they will have a roof, food, television, and a sweet new phone. Not to mention a sweet brand new entry level car they can be proud of as long as they have a steady ~40hr/week job to back up the credit they'll need...

If our economy got so bad that people were starving, then our Federal Reserve would simply get a fatass loan from the World Bank and pump America up with as much stimulus as it needs until everyone is fat and happy again. They just need everyone working and keeping the gears oiled while being content, while they make you then accept that same currency for your property, minerals, companies, and every other resource on this planet.

tl;dr economic crisis won't ever get bad enough for people to chimp out. If it did, it was because it was orchestrated or the people are finally fed up and revolting.

problem is that multiple people had already fallen because of the lack of stairs in that spot, so the whole point of building stairs was to prevent people from falling and have easier access down the path.

Government's a scam, they inflate the estimates on purpose and laugh all the way to the bank. The city was irked by this because of how much of a contrast it was, and then the dipshit mayor is laughing nervously saying something like "well we all KNEW $65k was outrageous, but at the same time it will be significantly more than $550!" The jig is up, they'll probably come back with some $35k estimate next time and think that's somehow more justified.

are you a schizo? I work in public planning for the state of NJ, I know how and why things are structured the way they are the and how things got to this point. The summary is niggers. Which is kind of an oversimplification; it's niggers, poverty, varying social policies over the decades, and the car/gasoline and oil industry. Studies done since the end of the 19th century pointed towards suburbanization as the best way to statistically reduce crime in urban areas. The great migration only occurred at the beginning of this policy and was spurred by declining home values in urban centers as a result of early suburbanization and the integration of the smaller industrial centers into national and increasingly international spheres. Then came cars, which both reflected this mentality and were affordable through our expanded industrialization and mergers.

The "suburban" ideal has been a thing for over a hundred years so far and still has a massive hold in public policy. Basically, an urbanite and renter is considered a failed human; our policies are focused on trying to get as many home owners as possible even if it doesn't make sense. Former industrial centers are unofficially considered quarantine zones for the poor, drug addicts, and criminal elements; that's why so much state and federal funding goes into them and how our policies treat these areas.

I won't touch the idea of small villages or towns that are walkable on foot because it isn't my expertise, needless to say neo-urbanism has come and gone out of style over the last three decades; you may want to look into that

Unfortunately, that's the way it is. No matter what, the costs get thrown somewhere. In more civilized societies, if someone gets injured on city property, they usually blame themselves, city pays for medical anyways, maybe someone decides to make something better.

Unfortunately, we don't live in a civilized society anymore thanks to lawyers. You'll have some black lady blaming you for the death of her son because he was shot on your stairs. Obviously the stairs fault because it was built by a white man.

Actually so here's the math lesson.

If the probability of an accident happening is "1 out of 99999999999999", you then estimate how much you're gonna get sued for.

Since you used such a ludicrous number, we can assume that it will cost a trillion dollars in medical bills.

Then you can actually multiply the trillion by the probability to get the estimated risk in dollars of the project:

1 trillion times "1 out of 99999999999999" = 1 penny.

That's a good number, the project would move ahead.

But it's true though. Suburba sprawl literally exists because people didn't want to live next to niggers. They insane crime rates and gang violence of the last five decades has caused whites to self-segregate as much as possible.

I've lived my entire life to avoid having to be around niggers. From the career I've chosen and where I live to the friends I have. I want to live in a European civilization, not an African one.

Where did I say anything like that?

All I ever said was the material cost for building a house is less than the cities quote for a staircase.

Customers supply me with plans that they wish to see constructed - which they have commissioned and payed for - and I tell them what they need to assemble it and how much it will cost.

You're arguing about something that was never part of what I mentioned.

the type who sit back and "plan", fuck everything up, and then expect more planning to revere the effects of their previous planning. wonder what the suggestion will be when that goes wrong too. I'll give you a hint: starts with a P and rhymes with Chelsea Manning

you should kick this to your supervisors: genetically engineers some dragons that can only be killed with swords, and let em loose on the world. it would give life a whole new luster

Well that baseline $65K will most likely be bid at $55K, and then some engineer will make a minor revision in the design, and the change order will make the stair/ramp $125K by the end of it. Which is why every company bids lower than the costs most of the time. I have yet to be on any project outside of a design build that has come in at the intial bid price. Also the city has lawyers on staff just for assessments, unless they are giving them extra pay to do their job, which would not surprise me in the least.

That's the price of public property. On private property, they'd do the same job cheaper because any liability ultimately rests with the property owner and it would be on him to prove the builder fucked up terribly to escape that burden.

With the state, all bets are off. Even if you managed to successful sue them they'd simply cut off any future gibs and you'd still be screwed.

Because then people would realize they do not need an inefficient bureaucracy to do everything for them.

If tax money were collected and used locally, or even privately, infinitely higher degree of efficiency could be achieved. But that would mean the state giving in some power, to whom it is so desperately addicted.

As a rule of thumb, material is usually about a third of the total cost at most in construction. So figure that plus mechanical, electrical, plumbing work plus profit and you're already looking at 200k total without the developer taking profit or the cost of land. What's the asking price on the unit?

nice larping, good to see that you think you can build a new society without taking in account basic economics or public sentiment. In ten years, you will still have nothing to show for all your rhetoric about how things should be rather than how they are. Your lashing out and accusing people of being FBI or whatever makes me certain that you have some sort of mental illness; especially lashing out at and about urban planners when you're basically talking about urban planning but without having any knowledge of it

you're right - I'm sure humans 100,000 years ago made sure to take into consideration how many foreign tribesmen to subsidize and house, as well as the optimal commute time to their job at some other tribe. without doing so shit just couldnt have worked out.

I never called anybody FBI. I highly doubt the FBI shills 4chan.

maybe I'm mentally ill. I live in a city though, which from the sounds of things is how it's supposed to work out. thanks urban planners.

not to suck state dick but this set of stairs is against a lot of the codes set forth by the IBC. these stairs are as dangerous as stairs really can be in a lot of senses. I get that he did it for very cheap ... but it wouldn't have cost much more to do it properly. you need risers on the stairs first of all, a second hand rail, and both rails need to be continuous. for the steppes there should be no side containment and the medium needs to fill to the riser on the next stair. the treads can not vary in width and the riser cannot vary in height. the rails are anchored to a board that has no support on the outsides of the treads, also the treads do not have support on the outside. with time they will 100% seesaw if you will and render the tread frame useless. this shit looks like a fucking 10 year old built it.
>>
>>134337831
You don't need two handrails in Canada on a staircase that narrow.
