Apparently the bill is due to spending commitments which Britain (and the other EU27) all agreed to. So the idea is that Britain should still be tied to those commitments just like all the other EU countries are.

This includes the EU budget, foreign aid programmes, things like that.

But I don't think we should be continuing to contribute to the EU budget quite frankly, since we won't be benefitting from it when we're out of the EU.

It's more than that. The EU has policy on borders and immigration and refugee resettlement as well. The EU is effectively a government. It has the three branches of government: executive (EU Commission), legislative (EU Parliament) and judicial (EU courts)

Not everybody in the EU favours the "federalist"/integrationist agenda, but the largest EU parties do (the three largest EU parties, the EPP, PES, and ALDE, are all federalist).

The EU can make things very difficult for the UK and plunge the UK into another recession. It's going to suffer a slowdown no matter what.

What I'm saying is, if this recession is too bad, the UK will have no choice but the become the European version of the Caimen Islands. Companies will exist there on paper only, enjoying a minuscule tax rate, billionaires will relocate there, financial services will be deregulated in the extreme.

Australia shifted away from the British Empire in light of their failures to protect Singapore and Malaya, we had to take the initiative on our own region and start working with a new partner that was more effective then the UK, the US.

And so in the middle of WW2, We adopted the Satute of Westminster, which prevented the U.K. from influencing the governments of the states, but not our territories

Then sometime during the 1980's both parliaments of the UK and AUS wrote up the Australia Act, which formally recognised Australia as "an independent, sovereign, federal nation" which basically removed any and all of the UK's ability to legislate or influence Australian politics, it wasn't technically a Declaration of Independence, but rather an acknowledgment of independence.

I don't remember the UK demanding that we love the king (who wasn't alive when we became independent), or giving preferred access to British citizens, we would've been doing that to keep inline with the White Australia policy.
