It was a fantastic film and the cinematography behind it was just as great. My Great Grandfather was a Naval Officer during the war and when *SPOILER* the torpedo hit one of the ships I could see it hit close to my Grandmother as the same thing had happened to his ship - fortunately he survived.

Its about as good as Saving Private Ryan. The montages of Dunkirk are real, the story is pretty shit. For Canadians its kind of a big deal, for everyone else it's not worth the 35mm.

The big reason why Dunkirk mattered was because it was the first major defeat of the British empire since 1810. For Germany it was the proof that "God could bleed" and had the Indian colonials sent the artillery 2 months earlier + South French committed their last air reserves, it would have gone differently. Instead, the outcome totally crippled British morale to the point a counter-invasion was prolonged until D-Day under fear of suffering another Dunkirk.

The only good to come out of Dunkirk was a Generational redpill known as "The Dunkirk Spirit" (the Deus Vult) which became a major Intelligence recruitment tool in the 1940's in Vichy France where 1 in 4 North French citizens lost someone to the beach massacre and amid rural Canadian's.
